China, the fastest growing economic power on earth, is now reaching out through its state media. Convinced the world has serious misperceptions about China, Beijing's leaders are building a new and more dynamic media machine in an effort to reshape its image.
An inside view of China state media today: realities and ambitions will be discussed as well as the international news coverage in China and introduce Hong Kong's Journalism Media Studies Center at the University of Hong Kong and the China Media Project, which monitors media freedom on the Chinese mainland.
Jim Laurie served as an international news correspondent for both NBC News and ABC News for more than 25 years and was known for his reporting in Asia. He first traveled to China in November 1978 and opened the first American television news bureau in Beijing in July 1981. He has served in management positions for News Corporation and as a management and training consultant to Indian television channels as well as to the Al Jazeera English news channel.
Laurie is the winner of two television Emmies, an Overseas Press Club Award and a Peabody for his Vietnam War reporting.
This event is co-hosted with the Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication at the Elliott School of International Affairs in the George Washington University.
