June 2014 Book Club - "The Interestings"

Hello Book lovers,

We selected just the one book for the June 2014 meeting.

"The Interestings" by Meg Wolitzer

** Note the change of address for this meeting to the Little Creatures Dining Hall.  **

The Around Fitzroy & Collingwood Book Club is very informal; there is no set meeting agenda. Over a coffee, beer or wine, we usually have a chat about what everyone thought of the books of the month and see if anyone has read anything else exciting or heard of any great literary events on in Melbourne.

"The Interestings" by Meg Wolitzer

On a warm July night in 1974 six teenagers play at being cool. The friendships they make this summer will be the most important and consuming of their lives. In a teepee at summer camp they smoke pot and drink vodka & Tangs, talk of Gunter Grass and the latest cassette tapes; they also share their dreams and ambitions, still so fresh and so possible. But decades later not everyone can sustain in adulthood what had seemed so special in adolescence.

Dang. I thought this was next weekend. I'm off camping and won't be able to make it. Hope the new venue is good!

I changed our meeting place to Little Creatures Dining Hall for this meeting. It was going to be Industry Beans, but that place seems wildly popular at the moment and there's not much chance of 10 of us getting a place to sit and chat there.

Good news, Little Creatures do take bookings so we are all set for June and July there. :)

Hey everyone! I'm very new to this, is there anything I need to know or do other than read the book prior? Thanks xx

Hi Venessa, reading the book is all you need to do to prepare for our book club. Because I am the host, when I read a book for book club I try to come up with 5 interesting notes or points to talk about. My notes will be anything from what my favourite scene was, to why did this character do THAT in a particular situation, for example. I try to have enough points about the book to get the conversation started. For you, reading the book is enough. Feel free to come along even if you haven't finished the book, but know that those of us who have finished it may talk about the ending.

Hey everyone! Keeping the meeting to just 10 people for June as we'll be in Industry Beans and coffee shops don't really work well with a large group. I asked them about reserving a table but it seems modern cafes (and restaurants) don't allow reservations any more.
