Hello Book lovers,

We selected our books for the August 2014 meeting.

"The Railway Man" by Eric Lomax
"Trainspotting" by Irvine Welsh

If you have time you can read both books, otherwise you can select the book you are most interested in.

The Around Fitzroy & Collingwood Book Club is very informal; there is no set meeting agenda. Over a coffee, beer or wine, we usually have a chat about what everyone thought of the books of the month and see if anyone has read anything else exciting or heard of any great literary events on in Melbourne.

"The Railway Man" by Eric Lomax
During the Second World War Eric Lomax was forced to work on the notorious Burma-Siam Railway and was tortured by the Japanese for making a crude radio.

Left emotionally scarred and unable to form normal relationships, Lomax suffered for years until, with the help of his wife, Patti Lomax, and of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, he came terms with what happened. Fifty years after the terrible events, he was able to meet one of his tormentors.

"Trainspotting" by Irvine Welsh
Choose us. Choose life. Choose mortgage payments; choose washing machines; choose cars; choose sitting on a couch watching mind-numbing and spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fuckin junk food intae yir mooth. Choose rotting away, pishing and shiteing yersel in a home, a total fuckin embarrassment tae the selfish, fucked-up brats ye’ve produced. Choose life.

Hi everyone, I'm afraid I can no longer make this meet up as I'll be moving house. Shame as I really enjoyed Trainspotting and was looking forward to having a fun discussion. I'll try to make the next one.

Hi, has anyone been able to buy a copy of Trainspotting anywhere? I've tried a few places in the city but to no avail. Thx

Hi Andrew, I got my copy in the Dymocks on Collins street (the eastern end), not sure if you've tried there? I've just today finished reading it so if you're still struggling let me know and I'll happily lend you my copy.
