New Meetup: Jan 2011 Book Club Meeting

From: Nerida
Sent on: Monday, December 13, 2010 9:53 PM
Hello Everyone,

For the first meeting of 2011 we have nominated two very different books to read and discuss;

?Room? written by Emma Donoghue
?The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine? written by Michael Lewis

When: Saturday, January 22,[masked]:00 PM

Where: Grumpy's Green, 125 Smith Street, Fitzroy

More details on the books are at the foot of this email. If you have time over the summer break you can read both books, otherwise select the book you are most interested in.

The Around Fitzroy & Collingwood Book Club is very informal, there is no set meeting agenda. Over a coffee, beer or wine, we usually have a chat about what everyone thought of the book/s of the month and see if anyone has read anything else exciting or heard of any great literary events on in Melbourne.

If you are keen on some Christmas fun this weekend, the community fundraising event The Big Sing starts from 6pm on Saturday 18 December from the Gertrude Hotel in Fitzroy. We walk around the streets of Fitzroy past the Union Hotel and finish back at the Napier singing carols along the way. It is lots of fun. All the best to everyone for a safe and happy festive season. Hopefully you all have a good break from work and get a chance to get into those books that you have been wanting to.
Best Wishes

More about the Books
?Room? written by Emma Donoghue
The story of a mother, her son, a locked room and the outside world. Jack is five and, like any little boy, excited at the prospect of presents and cake. He?s looking forward to telling his friends it?s his birthday, too. But although Jack is a normal child in many ways ? loving, funny, bright, full of energy and questions ? his upbringing is far from ordinary: Jack?s entire life has been spent in a single room that measures just 12 feet by 12 feet; as far as he?s concerned, Room is the entire world.

?The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine? written by Michael Lewis
The Big Short tells a story of spectacular, epic folly. In this visceral tour to the heart of the financial system, Michael Lewis takes us around the globe and back decades to trace the origins of the current crisis. He meets the people who saw it coming, the people who were asleep at the wheel and the people who were actively driving us all of a cliff. It has taken the world's greatest financial meltdown to bring Michael Lewis back to the subject that made him famous. His international bestseller Liar's Poker exposed the greed and carnage of the City and Wall Street in the 1980s; he wrote it as a cautionary tale, but people seem to have read it as a how-to guide. Now, he wants to settle accounts.
