Norton Simon Museum (to see the Vermeer on loan)

Hello and Welcome to the Art History Meetup Group.

I was planning a group to meet at the Norton Simon in September to see the Vermeer until I realized that they are having a special tour next Sunday, so pardon the last minute meetup, but this is too good to miss.

MEET AT 11:45 if you want to do the tour - it will sell out ASAP

Noon: Sign Up for Lecture  For those interested, we'll  join the staff for a one hour tour exploring the works of Dutch artists from Vermeer to Van Gogh.   PLEASE NOTE: This will sell out by 12:15, be there on time to sign up if interested.   Details: http://www.nortonsimon.org/events/detail.php?event=19285

Noon - 12:25:    We'll meet in the lobby, look for people with the Meetup badges on, we're easy to find.

12:30-1:00  We'll head to the movie theater to see the docume ntary on the making of the Norton Simon museum collection.  I've seen this documentary before, and I recommend it.

1:00pm-2:00pm The group who signed up will be in the museum walking tour.  If you want to join this tour, I suggest being there at noon sharp to sign up.

*If you are not going on the tour, I suggest staying in the theater to see 1:00pm-1:25 presentation on Sister Wendy video on the museum highlights.

2:00pm-2:30pm Meet outside at the Patio Cafe for a break and discussion on the art collection.

2:30pm- 4:00pm After out talk we go back into the galleries to continue the tour.

This is one of the best collections of art on the West Coast, here are some of my favorites:

Francisco de Zurbarán - Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose

Rembrandt - Portrait of a Boy (or Titus)

Franz Marc, Bathing Girls

Picasso, Renior, Degas and the list goes on and one....

If you show up late, just go into the movie theater, we will be in there until 1, then on a tour for one hour. If you didin't sign up for the tour, we will meet you at the patio cafe at 2:00pm.

Thanks,

Sharon Fitzgerald, MA

I'm just about to get on a plane to London, then I'm going to Paris, and on the 28th I will probably be in the Louvre, the d''Orday, or the Cluny. Can I bring something back for you...a Monet perhaps? I'll make the next meet up.

    Don,
That's so cool, hope you guys have a great time. If you time I recommend:
    1) Take the metro next to the Musée d'Orsay to Pallace of Versailles but make sure buy your tickets online before you go, cause the lines are supper long. Out in the gardens, on the left there is a hidden pub too!
    2) Check out the Montparnasse Cemetery and then across the street you can take a self guided tour of the Catacobes de Paris http://www.catacombes-de-paris.fr/
    Have a wonderful trip!

This is an excellent artistic asset in Los Angeles. The Vermeer of course is priceless, but I enjoyed several of the other paintings, Rembrandt and Van Gogh in particular. I also enjoyed meeting the other participants and some of the friendly conversations about art with them.

Norton Simon is my favorite museum. It has my favorite piece ever, the van Gogh "Mulberry Tree", and I can stand in front of this painting forever, wishing I could know what he was thinking and feeling while he was painting it. The Meetup was very organized, and Sharon did a great job getting the group on the tour and then meeting out on the patio where she shared art history info with the group. I enjoyed this meet-up very much! Looking forward to the next one.

An enjoyable and informative event. Sharon's historical contributions on the various art exhibits added greatly to the value.

Interesting Dutch Treat tour, and insightful discussion with Sharon by the Lily Pond with plenty of paintings to feast one's eyes on finishing with Sister Wendy discussing and showing a few art objects up close to better see what we saw.
