Photo Mentoring

  • At the last exhibit opening I talked with Polly and Paul about the idea of our group providing some sort of youth mentorship centered around photography. It would be for teens. I am a Community Friends Mentor and know how important it is for kids - especially early teens to experience different ways of expressing themselves. This might just be a one off workshop or maybe a multiple session activity as determined by the program. I wonder if any of our members is associated with a school or other organization that might facilitate a photography mentoring program. Also, how many of our members would be interested is working with a teen, possibly with their own equipment, possibly we would get some disposable cameras. Ken (Polly and Paul)

Last year I volunteered to do a photography mentoring program for children in Winooski - through UVM's Extension Service. 3rd and 4th graders. It was a structured learning program that had them learning some elementary concepts, which also provided them small digital cameras which they then used to apply the concepts. Tons of fun for all. It proved to be a great way for kids to express themselves, discover their creative sides (particularly for kids with limited self-confidence). I wonder if we could tap into a benefactor willing to donate $ for the purchase of cameras for children without access to one. Tony Pomerleau? I would welcome the chance to participate.

I thought about doing something like what Tom talked about when I was teaching. Love these idea though I am not in the place to take the lead in this moment.

While I fully support this idea I am too much of a beginner myself to be comfortable mentoring anyone, regardless of age.

I would be interested in mentoring a teen but don't feel I have any experience to share: I am willing to help out, though.

I facilitated a similar program in Middlebury a few years back with adults with intellectual disabilities and or Autism Spectrum Disorders. The results were breathtaking.
How about approaching a community mental health organization that has an established mentoring program? HowardCenter in Chittenden County and Counseling Service of Addison County?

I have a granddaughter who has a great eye and loves photography. I just forwarded this to her via Facebook. Hope teens grab on and it's a go! I'm a former art teacher but a lifetime learner of all aspects of art. I'd love to learn about flash and digital photography using the other modes and lenses quickly and creatively.

I was a TA all summer at BCA photo camps, all ages. I'd like to help out if I can manage it. I'll be mentoring at KSYC, this could be a possible meeting place. I'd have to talk to the coordinator.

Until a about a year ago, I worked with middle school kids. Taught them technical theatre. This sounds like a nice project.

I would be willing to help out--if not by teaching than by giving support in some other way. Excellent idea.

I am very interested in working with a teen and possibly helping to find some interested youth. I have 22 years of experience working with teens as a counselor, am the mother of an 18 year old and an avid photographer.

I have no formal photography training but would be very interested in sharing what I know with an interested teen, or even younger. I work at a k-8 school who has an upcoming summer program that might enjoy a photography lesson.

I am trained as a professional photographer. In my photography career, I have not yet worked with children. I am interested in learning how they experience the world through a lens. In mentoring them, I would discover their ability to perceive the world, and develop their way of seeing, through a lens in two dimensions.
