Re: [artinphoto] Digital Critique Leader for July

Elements probably does not include Bridge, which is too bad.  It has a nice slide show feature that is easy to use.  Alternatively, photographs can be loaded into PowerPoint for display.  Both options preclude editing on the fly, but for me this would be a good feature.  I found this aspect of our last meeting more frustrating that enlightening.  It wasts time.  If we want to discuss editing, I think we should reserve a special meeting for that and limit the number of photographs we offer to work over--maybe one per customer.  We once had a meeting where we downloaded one of Ken's pictures and edited it priot to the meeting, then discused our choices before the group.  I thought that was a good format for demonstrating editing.  Otherwsie, my preference is to look at participants pictures on their own terms.  Suggestions for cropping, contrast adjustments, etc. are fine, but then we should move on.

Chris,
You can download a 30 day trial of LR from Adobe for free. So if you time it right, you an learn it, and use it for the critique within that timeframe.  I can help you with LR if needed, I just can't commit to specific dates right now, so I could not commit to doing the actual cirtique.

Jon,

If no one else wants to do it then I will give it a try. I have PS Elements and I may pick up Lightroom. I am very much a novice with both programs though.

Sidney:

Traditionally, we have used Lightroom.  It allows the presenter to prepare each of the photographer's images in separate folders, which helps as we switch between photographers, and it helps us maintain our schedule.  It is relatively easy to use, so that we can adjust images quickly.  And it serves as a showcase for people who are curious about a program that has become very popular, and for good reasons.

If the presenter prepared folders of each photographer's images, and then simply clicked on each image in Windows Explorer (or in the Finder on the Mac), that would work, too, although without the ability to alter the images.  The main point is to be able to get the whole image to fill the screen, and to be able to switch between images.

The presenter would have to solicit image files, store them on their laptop, organize them into folders, and be prepared to flip through the images.  After the Meetup, the image files should be deleted, since they are given to use temporarily, and should not be retained.

I can work with anyone who wants to give this a try.  Or, since you have about 6 weeks to go, you could try out Darkroom.  As you may have noticed at the last Critique, people are familiar enough with it that they can help you during the Meetup.

Hi Jon,
I know Photoshop, but I certainly don't know everything about the program as it is huge.  I can usually figure out how to do a specific tech with Photoshop given enough time.  I don't know how much knowledge is required to 'host' a digital critique.  Do you know?

Glenn's first Digital Critique, in May, went very well, but something has come up, and he is not available for the next one in July.  Any brave soul want to give it a try?  We expect that Glenn will be back in September.
