"Straightening Combs" with ticket discount & (optional) dinner to follow

Beginning as a child wishing she had straight hair (for example, like so many dolls in the past), playwright/actor Kim El touches audiences in portraying 6 personas in a life-long journey in overcoming low-self esteem, depression, and other challenges ... and blossoming from a young child to eventually having a family of her own.

Kim's remarkable solo performance combines spoken word poetry, songs, and short vignettes in portraying six different personas as it deals with such topics as family, growing up in the projects, going to college, 'what it means to be pretty' and other struggles.

This show will make you both laugh and cry.

Check out what audiences are saying after seeing this show!

"It was funny, memorable, reflective, thought-provoking, musical, spiritual, and just plain good!!!! Every female needs to see this play."
- Joyce E.

"Thank you. The play was the best I've seen in a while. God bless."
- Marilyn W.

"Mark Southers' PPT signature of a first class intimate experience was the perfect setting for Straightening Combs. Kim El's character transformations had us laughing, crying, singing and swinging much like the poetic stories of Maya Angelou ... a show ALL women can enjoy!"
- Connie P.

"Breaking out of this chrysalis of pain into mature happiness and self-respect is the climax, with a few final notes of joy. A serious and satisfying experience."
- Michelle Pilecki, Pittsburgh City Paper

Meetup members will get discount tickets ($20 cash at the door) ... and after the performance, you'll have a chance to meet Kim.

And depending on the interest of the Meetup group, we can go out to dinner -- such as checking out the new Encore menu at Braddock's American Brasserie (inside Renaissance Hotel downtown) -- to share more thoughts about this wonderful play.

Playwright/actor Kim El shares a story of the repercussions of low self-esteem and overcoming depression in urban America in her solo performance, Straightening Combs. Her spoken word poetry, songs, and short vignettes in six different personas take the audience on an intimate life journey seen through the eyes of an African-American female coming of age.

Audiences are really being touched by "Straightening Combs" ... and so I hope you'll be able to join us on Sunday afternoon. If anyone would like to meet downtown a little earlier and have a quick tour of the Cultural District checking out some cool galleries, public art, etc. before the play, please let me know. We could start off around 1:30 PM at the Crazy Mocha on Liberty (near Harris Theater) and take about a hour and get a bit of walking in before the show.

If anyone is interested, you can update your RSVP if you'd like to meet around 1:30 PM for a quick tour.
