Join us for a unique Opening Night on February 12, 2010. Beginning at 5:30 pm Kurt Weiser will present a talk, followed by a reception with the artist from 6:30-8pm. $10 at the door, $5 for students and members.
This mid-career retrospective and accompanying exhibition catalog examines the stylistic development of Kurt Weiser's ceramic work from the 1970s to the present. Internationally recognized as a contemporary ceramist and educator, Weiser is known for his technical virtuosity with porcelain forms and his use of china painting techniques in a distinct contemporary style. His subject matter illustrates lush, mysterious landscapes and distorted narratives set amidst color-saturated flora and fauna that read as voyeuristic candid snapshots of the human condition. The exhibition is comprised of 33 ceramic objects drawn from the artist's holdings, the Ceramic Research Center's collection and public and private collections around the country.
In his talk, Weiser will share how the role of drawing in his work moved from formal design to narrative form. Weiser received his B.F.A. from Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, Missouri and his M.F.A. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is currently a Regents Professor of Art at Arizona State University.
Funded by a generous grant from the Windgate Charitable Foundation, the exhibition was organized by Arizona State University Art Museum Ceramic Research Center and its Curator of Ceramics, Peter Held. Eden Revisited is also made possible, in part, by Allegheny Regional Asset District, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Elizabeth R. Raphael Fund of the Pittsburgh Foundation, WDUQ 90.5 and Standard Ceramic Supply Company.
