Alcatraz in March

This will be the 3rd annual Alcatraz in March meetup for AUE. In March the days are crisper with relatively fewer tourists but Alcatraz is still a popular destination for Bay Area residents. The highlight the past two years was gaining access to the hospital wing in the main prison block. The hospital wing is only open for the evening tour but it looks a lot better in daylight than artificial light; and having it to ourselves was a real treat. We'll try again but there's no guaranty. See last year's album.

Alcatraz Island has all the elements Urban Explorers lust after and more: majestic vistas, seashore, isolation, ruins, historic prison, tunnels, period style buildings, remnants of Native American occupation, graffiti, birds, etc. as well as the SF skyline and bridges. The National Park Service now manages the island. We'll start out as a group but eventually spread-out through the many features of the island. Through the confirmation process I'll have everyone's cell# and when we get access to special areas I'll group message everyone where to gather. The SF ferry at Pier 33 is the only transportation to and from the island and the roundtrip charge is $30/person. Schedule: shoot 11:00-4:30; Show & Tell 5-6:00.

Once in a while we have large groups when we're in restricted grounds. However, it doesn't mean we're not cognizant of the risks.  If you get on a waiting list just be patient because there's always a few RSVP dropouts when nearing the last week. However, drop-outs within the last week are frowned upon because those on the waiting lists usually have made other plans by then. This meetup can only be rescheduled if the ferry or Alcatraz itself closes down.

The sign-up sequence is: RSVP, and pay $5 meetup fee. About 10 days before meetup I will give final details, request confirmation and contact info (full legal name, cell#, emergency contact person and their tel.#) if I don't get it in 3 days you will lose your spot to those waiting. Also, please acknowledge the Release of Liability form in Discussions tab on Home page that you will sign when we meet at the initial gathering point. Post-meetup obligations are submitting 10 or fewer photos to the album and writing a short review for the members that couldn't attend.

    Thanks Digne for organizing and getting us through 3 special tours during a busy weekend nonetheless. Had loads of fun shooting with the group and seeing everyone's excellent work during show and tell and dinner. Sorry to hear about your camera Digne, but you did find the silver lining through it all; new toys! Can't wait to see what everyone has captured through our urban exploration. It's quite interesting to see how people have so many different perspectives on the same things we see.

    Alcatraz has so many opportunities to photo graph it's hard to do it all in one day. Digne what a great opportunity you gave us to shot the hospital. Thank you, you the man. I' sorry for not showing up for the show & tell and dinner. I looked for you after I got off the ferry to tell you I couldn't make I was feeling sick to my stomach, and couldn't find my phone. All in all I had a good time. Thank you.

    The tickets include the cost of the audio tour. From web site: "Audio tour refunds are available for Alcatraz day tours only. If you prefer not to take the Cellhouse Audio tour, we will be happy to refund the audio tour portion of the Alcatraz ticket price. The refund amount is $8.00 for Adults and Seniors." I suggest not taking the audio tour because you might miss the hospital wing tour.

Your organizer's refund policy for Alcatraz in March

Refunds offered if:

  • the Meetup is cancelled
  • the Meetup is rescheduled
  • you can cancel at least 7 day(s) before the Meetup

Additional notes: You must dropout least 7 days prior to the meetup, change your RSVP to Not Going, and request the $5 refund of the meetup fee. The fee covers the groups subscription fee ($147/yr.) and organizer's misc. expenses.

Payments you make go to the organizer, not to Meetup. You must make refund requests to the organizer.
