Bodie, the Ghost Town and Mono Lake

  • August 17, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This meetup combines Bodie, a state historic park and Mono Lake with its tufa formations as our road trip for the year. Bodie, a genuine California gold mining ghost town, stands in "arrested decay" is a small portion of what it was in its heyday but what remains is faithfully preserved as a historic park. Mono Lake with its strange and erie tufa towers is fascinating not only for the geologic history but the human history, wildlife, biology, and current water rights controversy, makes for further examination.

The overall meetup is to photograph Bodie on Sat. from 9a-6p, have the group dinner with Show & Tell (essential because this is meetup) in Lee Vining that evening, and shoot Mono Lake tufas at sunrise Sun. The Bodie park service staff has offered us an early morning shoot before the public hours from sunrise to 9a for a fee. This includes access to the interior of certain buildings that are normally closed to the public but can be viewed through windows. The fee is $400/group, $100 per member and insurance. I'm negotiating a discounted fee if we have over 10 members. If a majority of the members vote for this option then the afternoon shoot will be "no host" and just I'll just host a morning 9a-12:00 shoot. Of course, this means an additional motel night expense. See the Discussions message board for options. BTW, there are several campgrounds nearby at a fraction of a motel price. You should reserve a motel in Lee Vining because it's between Bodie and Mono Lake at least 3 weeks before the meetup.

The typical AUE meetup is designed for a small nimble group but for a road trip we'll be larger but still have our social. As the host, I've made the drive from San Rafael to Lee Vining leaving Sat., 6:30a -12:30p, on hwys. [masked]-395. Hwy. 108 over Sonora Pass on the east side of the summit is a very steep and twisting road not recommended for RV's and trailers. However, the other route Hwy. 120 through Yosemite Park has more traffic over Tioga Pass and estimated to take much more time than 108. The less stressful schedule is to leave on Fri.

The sign-up sequence is: RSVP, and pay meetup fee. About 15 days before meetup I will request confirmation and contact info (full legal name, cell#, emergency contact person and their tel.#.) if I don't get it in 10 days I will take you off the RSVP list and offer your spot to those on the Waiting List. Also, please acknowledge the Release of Liability form in Discussions folder that you will sign when we meet in Bodie.

I have to say that this was my favorite meetup since I joined "Meetup" several years ago. Digne's organizational skills are remarkable. Thank you for an experience I will never forget!

What a wonderful weekend! Bodie and Mono Lake were both surreal, in very different ways. And what a great group of talented photographers. So much fun! Thank you Digne for doing a fabulous job of pulling this all together.

Awesome time and nice to meet everyone! Loved how Bodie was frozen in time, it's pretty hard to find places like that nowadays

Best meetup yet, even by this group's high standards.
Exclusive access inside buildings in Bodie gave photo-ops which stand out against any other photos of Bodie you've seen.
Sunrise in Mono Lake is not to be missed.
    Fun people, will join again.

What a great meetup! Bodie's a unique place, kind of a museum except they let it deteriorate and do just enough maintenance to keep it standing. Many of the interiors were not a pretty sight except to urban photographers. After 6 hrs. of shooting we only covered less than half of the area. The Bodie staff that maintains the park squelched any ideas of taking souvenirs by telling us of the Bodie "curse". ///Group dinner was fun with many interesting a varied photos members shared. Next day another sunrise tour, this time in South Tufa Mono Lake was less taxing because the tufas were in a smaller area along the lake. A nice serene morning with ducks and seagulls an an intense sun rising. ///A group breakfast at Whoa Nellie's was fine end to the meetup. Expect some great shots in the meetup album.

New development: the Stamp Mill is now available to us from 10-11a. It is the gold mine compound that is closed to the public. See Discussion-Messages-Bodie for details.

The overall meetup schedule is posted in the Discussion-Message-Bodie folder. Let me know if the travel time is adequate. I'll also be posting everyone's cell# and where they're staying just in case members want to get together between locations.

So, it's a bummer that I have to bail out now - I was really looking forward to this - but don't want to be miserable or make everyone else sick. If anyone still needs a place to stay, I have a reservation at the Murphey Motel in Lee Vining for Friday and Saturday nights. I've already paid for the sunrise tour and insurance; if someone else wants to go, perhaps we can work something out?

    August 14, 2013

    • Digne

Sorry you can't make it, Kevin. I'll see if you can get the tour fee refunded.

The schedule needs to be submitted and approved by the Bodie Foundation first thing Thursday morning. We will send out a final group assignment and shooting schedule by Thursday evening. Thanks.

Hey everyone, we booked a (2) bedroom 'apartment' at the Walker River Lodge in Bridgeport for both Friday and Saturday nights (we're heading out Friday from the Bay Area). If anyone wants the other bedroom it's open, for both nights it's $175.

Christopher, I am going to try to get away early afternoon from Stockton, which should get me up to Bridgeport 6-7pm. Would like to spend some time Friday night at Mono Lake during sunset, if the cloud gods are cooperating.

    Hello All,

Do any of you campers still have space available? I don't have a tent & would sleep in my car... just need a place for the car and a restroom. hopefully with running water. I will also check for a room, just scoping out the possibility of joining the group.

    Thanks, Mary

I drive a car which is low to the ground and would like to hook up with someone "somewhere" prior to driving into Bodie Saturday morning. I have been to Bodie several times and the road to the park is not paved and would be a little bit of a challenge for me!
I am staying in Bishop and could meet someone anywhere and as early as you want!!
Thanks..... waiting your reply before I confirm!

+1 hi Digne, I'm taking my 13 year old daughter whom I'm teaching photography. She doesn't have a meet up account so I'll pay her fee along with mine.

    August 3, 2013

    • Digne

We usually don't have kids on our meetups because of the rough and tumble locations we go to, but a State Park is an exception. Are you interested in the sunrise interiors tour?

Once in the interiors, how much mobility are we allowed?

    August 1, 2013

    • Digne

We'll be in two groups each with a staff monitor who will be opening locked doors. Once we're done they will lock the building. So we have to move as a group - I don't think we can be left alone - we have to be coordinated.

      August 1, 2013

    • Christopher S.

i'm guessing we'll all take turns shooting unless there's a ton of room inside the building (doesn't look like there is). after we're all done, on to the next one! :)

      August 1, 2013

  • Digne

I just rented a 11-16mm lens from Borrowlenses.com of which we get a 10% discount. A 3-day rental, I can pick it up Thu. 8/16 and return it Mon. 8/19. You can reduce the shipping cost a little by selecting a authorized store rather than having it delivered to your home/bus. I think I'll be using it a lot on the interiors tour.

I am driving up Friday from SF. Thinking to camp. Anybody need a ride?

    July 26, 2013

    • Alicia R.

      Hi Ioannis,
When are you leaving? We are 3 leaving from SF by Friday, still hour TBC, but maybe you can join us.
Ask Susan, she is the boss! :D (the owner of the car).

      July 29, 2013

  • Digne

Members can still RSVP but I suggest they handle their ride and place to stay first. Motels are filling-up and unless you're camping, that is the primary task. Still possible for early morning tour sign-ups but I'll wait until a week before launch to recalc the fee, again.

    July 25, 2013

    • Alicia R.

Can we bring the check with us that day? I´m asking in case there is somebody joining us last minute. So I don´t send a check with the wrong amount.

      July 25, 2013

    • Digne

Our application for the tour is with our group of 13. You need to send in your check or else we'll be short. We don't know how many will be in the second group.

      July 25, 2013

  • Nitun

Hi I am interested in coming but I need a ride. I am in Sf and can leave Fri or Sat, would prefer to stay in my own room. Anyone with extra space? Thanks! Nitun

    July 22, 2013

    • Alicia R.

      Hi Nitun,
You should speak to Susan, I'll join her and we'll be leaving SF on Friday to enjoy the road with calm.
For room, I think there is Vining Motel. They don't book and it's first come first served basis.

      July 22, 2013

    • Nitun

Thanks for the tip, I just emailed her!

      July 22, 2013

Steve has suggested these buildings to be on the early morning interior tour: Schoolhouse
    Hydro Building (powerhouse)
    Wheaton & Hollis Hotel
    Boone Store and Warehouse
    Bell's Machine Shop
    Barber's Shop
    Anymore suggestions?

    July 21, 2013

    • Alicia R.

      OK!
      I vote for:

_Cash and Carrie/_Bodie Mercantile General/Warehouse (don't know the right name)
      _Miller House Kitchen
      _Bed & Bath
      _School
      _Barber Shop

      To mention a few :)

      July 22, 2013

    • Digne

Those are wonderful photos by Raymond Jabola. He makes them look like illustrations. I think we have more than enough subject matter for the morning shoot. Bring extra batteries and lots of energy.

      July 22, 2013

    July 19, 2013

Hi Maimai, I emailed you this morning. You're welcome to join us! I have no clue yet about the route, so I don't know if San Jose is on the way. However, I'm flexible, so maybe Alicia, you and I could discuss. We're leaving sometime Friday.

      July 19, 2013

ok. let me sign up first ;-) .

      July 19, 2013

  • Digne

Bill Hewitt bowed-out. I was hoping he'd plan our route on the early morning tour because he is familiar with Bodie. Another task at hand: which building interiors do we want to see and what sequence? We have 4 weeks to discuss and plan the route.

Just got hit with a family obligation have to bow out.

    July 18, 2013

  • Digne

Hold up! Don't send ay checks yet until we have a final count on who's going. The calc is: $400/sign-ups+$200 (2 monitors)+$100 ea. =Total. The insurance is $104.20/sign-ups. Right now we have 13 and that number could go up or down. Let's set the deadline for Sun. 8p to declare if you want the early morning interior tour or not.

    July 18, 2013

  • Digne

Final cost for the early morning interior tour has been posted in the Discussion-Bodie-pro/con folder. Now's the time to fish or cut bait. If you're having doubts, waiting for a better offer or whatever, please change your RSVP. Bodie and Mono Lake will be a great meetup!

    July 18, 2013

  • Kevin M.

OK, I'm in for the early AM shoot too. Just booked a room at Murphey's, they still have availability but they're going fast...

    July 18, 2013

  • Christy

Im in for the early morning bodie shoot, too. Keep me posted with the news on that one.

    July 15, 2013

  • Eric L.

Are we allowed to do any night photography in Bodie? I'm hoping, but guessing no. Maybe they charge another fee for that...

    July 15, 2013

    • Digne

Night photography tour is even more expensive than early morning. The park closes at 6p and they say it's "strictly enforced". I'm guessing you could shoot the perimeter but you might be on private property.

      July 15, 2013

    • Eric L.

      Thanks Digne

      July 15, 2013

  • Digne

I have the info on the liability insurance the Park is requiring in the Discussion pages. This is the last price bump for interior access. Soon everyone has to state their preference to get the process going. We also have the option of sunrise entry into Bodie without interior building access for $75ea.

    July 11, 2013

    • Digne

We'll be going on the early morning interior tour. The only question is how many and final cost.

      July 14, 2013

    • A former member
      A former member

So are we estimating the final cost at about $130.00 for the early morning and entry if we have X number of shooters and do you have an idea how many X's that would be? I'm in if the price is that or lower. What if some people want the sunrise shoot and not the entry into the buildings, will that be possible while others are doing both the early morning and the entry? Just trying to cover all the bases.

      July 14, 2013

  • Susan

I'm in for the early morning shoot.
