Fort Point and SF Batteries

We’ve been to the military batteries in Marin Headlands and Angel Island the past 6 months - 12 batteries so far. Now in San Francisco there are a few more of these WWII and post-civil war relics waiting to be explored and photographed. Though not as graffiti tagged and worn as their Headlands/Angel Is. counterparts they still exhibit the same qualities of low profile concrete battlements, angular shapes, gun remnants, underground rooms, etc. strategically located to protect the Bay Area from sea invaders.

The predecessor to the batteries is Fort Point built in[masked], is located under the southern base of the Golden Gate Bridge. It has thick brick walls with arched openings. It had many cannons to fire on invaders approaching from the sea but military planners soon found out during the civil war that these exposed forts became easy targets to fire on by the enemy. Hence, the batteries, smaller footprint and hidden locations to fire on the enemy; was much more effective cost and strategy than large forts. However, the advent of airplane bombers made batteries obsolete. Even if you missed the Headlands and Angel Island meetups, this will give you a 100 year perspective of military defense and architecture of the Bay Area while enjoying specular views of the ocean and bay.

The meet-up will consist of 3 stops and the ever popular “Show & Tell” part where we eat/drink/relax and show our recent UrbEx images. The schedule is shoot from 2:30-6p, Show & Tell 6-7p. Post-meetup obligations are submitting photos to the meetup album and writing a short review. Standard, small nimble group, and a majority should be experienced in past Urban Exploration meet-ups though a few newbies are always welcome.  If you get on a waiting list just be patient because there's always a few RSVP dropouts. However, drop-outs within the last week are frowned upon because those on the waiting lists usually have made other plans by then.

The sign-up sequence is: RSVP, pay meetup fee, and then later confirm. About 10 days before meetup you will need to confirmation with contact info (full legal name, cell#, emergency contact person and their tel.#). Also, please acknowledge the Release of Liability form in Discussions that you will sign when we meet at the initial gather point.

    Good group of explorers. Ft. Point is always good; added the Pet Cemetery; batteries was restricted but we found a way in; and Baker Beach was serene and sunny. Show & Tell was good, and Southern comfort food was tasty.
