Marin Headlands II: Ft. Barry Batteries

The Headlands mainly rugged coastline and hilly terrain (200' elev. gain) have abandoned WWII-era military fortifications (Batteries) that were meant to protect the bay area but not one shot was ever fired at the enemy. Today these Batteries, long abandoned, are an urban explorers playground with mysterious rooms, odd concrete forms, steps to nowhere, etc. The military architecture juxtapose with the open landscape also presents many photo opportunities. See last year's album.

At my count there area 14 Batteries, military fortifications in the Headlands but we’ll hike to 4 plus 2 other unmapped structures. Members who sign-up must be prepared for 4 miles of hilly terrain, on the moderate scale of effort, and spectacular cliff-edge ocean views.

The meet-up will consist of 2-3 stops and the ever popular “Show & Tell” part where we eat/drink/relax at a local restaurant and show our recent UrbEx images. The schedule is shoot from 2:00-5p, Show & Tell 5-6p. This is our typical small nimble group for tough conditions; most should be experienced in past Urban Exploration meet-ups though first-timers are always welcomed. If you get on a waiting list just be patient because there's always a few RSVP dropouts when nearing the take-off date. However, drop-outs within the last week are frowned upon because those on the waiting lists usually have made other plans by then; "no shows" will lose their membership without further notice.

The sign-up sequence is: RSVP, and pay $5 meetup fee. About 7 days before meetup I will request confirmation and contact info (full legal name, cell#, emergency contact person and their tel.#) if I don't get it in 3 days you will lose your spot to those waiting. Also, please acknowledge the Release of Liability form in Discussions tab on Home page that you will sign when we meet at the initial gathering point.

Great day to be out and explore. The Marin Headlands are a wonderful place to explore and photograph. Digne led us to a number of hidden out of the way spots and organized a very enjoyable afternoon.

Again, sorry I had to bug out during dinner. Again (my second), this was a great event; location, size, the people, and swapping stories and sharing pictures at the end. Thanks to Digne for organizing and herding.

Is anyone coming through/from SF that I can carpool with? I'm near Alamo Square but can meet elsewhere if it's convenient.

I can give you a ride, Xan, if you can meet me at the El Cerrito del Norte BART passenger pick-up lane. You can take BART or the AC transit #72 bus along San Pablo Ave (has an Express).

I've opened one spot that was formally Kevin's and no fee because he already paid it. Open to all members, first one to respond.

Hi all, I'm going to be stuck at home tomorrow AM waiting for a plumber to install a new water heater, so I might not be able to make it out in time for the meetup. I just changed my RSVP to a "no", so Suzan, torroid, Rachael or Julianna, if you want my spot go for it. If I get lucky and the plumber finishes early and no one takes my spot, I'll try to show up. Just planning for the worst case scenario...

Hi, I have a cold, :-(. I see there no refund policy. I wanted to know if anyone wanted to reimburse me and take my spot. Otherwise I'll just go.
