Petroglyphs and Pinnacles'14 (Road Trip)

For our yearly road trip let's go to Petroglyphs & Pinnacles again (Ridgecrest, CA). We were there in 2012 with a group of 19 and had a great time.

Petroglyphs are the original “graffiti”; the ancient Native Americans of the southwest carved symbols and figures into the rocks to honor to the earth and its creatures for providing sustenance and meaning to their lives. It is not the ego-driven graffiti that one sees in urban settings but an acknowledgement that humans are interconnected with nature in a functional and spiritual way. Literal translation is not known. Another form is pictograph, where color is painted on rock. You’ve probably seen these ancient forms in Utah, Arizona and California desert areas; oftentimes modern graffiti and vandalism is mixed in with the art.

This meetup is a road trip to photograph a canyon of protected petroglyphs (possibly 10,000 y.o.) open to the public twice a year in the Spring and Fall at the Naval Air Weapons Station at China Lake outside of Ridgecrest, a city east of Bakersfield and south of Death Valley. It is a national historic landmark, Coso Rock Art District (see link). See the meetup album http://www.meetup.com/Art-of-Urban-Exploration/photos/. An article about the canyon:

Motels in Ridgecrest:
http://www.qualityinn.com/hotel-ridgecrest-california
Those who want to ride-share and room-share should state their location and preferences here.

The Navy is not charging for the tour but require 2 forms of personal info - proving U.S. citizenship. Max. of 20 members, limited to 5 cars on base and we'll be escorted in formation to the site. After you've RSVP I'll email you the forms. Submittal deadline to Navy is Sep. 18.

Trona Pinnacles is an awesome geologic formation just outside of the City of Ridgecrest. Per Photographer's Ephemeris the moon will be waning gibbous 88.4%. http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/ridgecrest/trona.html

Schedule is leave Bay Area early Fri. (approx. 400 miles, 6-7 hr. drive) to arrive in Ridgecrest late afternoon and check-in to your motel. We'll caravan from Ridgecrest at 6p to the Pinnacles, about a 30 min. drive.  Next day, Sat. 11a meet in Ridgecrest to carpool to Naval Air Base. Shoot petroglyphs all afternoon. Group dinner in Ridgecrest with Show & Tell.  Sun. is travel day with options for an early shoot (Town of Trona and/or Pinnacles), and group brunch before hitting the road.

Excellent meetup. I even enjoyed the drive down and back with Digne, time seemed to go by quickly. The photo locations were varied and the I enjoyed the esprit de corp with all the AUE participants (though
the back seat was a little cramped). Special thanks
to the generosity of Digne, Mark, and the Habermans.

We outdid ourselves: Pinnacles sunset and sunrise; Shoot Town of Trona; and Petroglyphs. Fun dinner with group and our Navy escort, Roy. We'll probably make this a bi-annual trip.

Moonrise at Pinnacles last night was nice; sunrise this morning was awesome. Short tour of Trona was very interesting; kinda-like Bodie. Brunch with the group at a "diner". Next, the Petroglyph hike this afternoon. It's going to be hot, exhausting but hoping to get some nice shots.

Sending out final details. Let me know if you didn't get it.

I see 9 people going but only 7 are in the spreadsheet. Nancy and Clayton, you are missing.

    September 29

    • Mimi S.

Clayton, the spreadsheet includes drivers and riders in vehicles going into the site. Having your info there would help everyone see the big picture.

      September 30

    • Clayton H.

I've updated the spreadsheet with my data.

Hey, All—Here's the link to the shared Google Drive spreadsheet on carpooling to Ridgecrest and onto the Navy base/petroglyph site: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AY6RKej7VdB32WM0IorqrF444YAAdbRqndT1fh6KHeE/edit#gid=0

Please make any updates needed to your itineraries. Anyone with the link may edit.

  • Christy

OK, so.. hate to bring this confusing topic up again.

Whats the off-road vehicle situation now?
We have fewer people, are there enough cars now or do I still need to rent one? Looks like we can get by with maybe 2 with a tight squeeze?

Digne, you have a vehicle that will work, yes? Anyone else? Let me know, i will rent if not.

    September 21

    • Mimi S.

So, Digne, would you take a look at the Google Drive chart and update it, to reflect the current roster of those going and driving in to the site? (FYI, My car down to Ridgecrest and back to the Bay remains unchanged.)

      September 22

    • Digne

I think I deleted the link by accident. Could you post it again?

      September 22

  • Digne

The Navy Rep., Peggy, emailed me that she hasn't received any forms from us (!?). She wants us to fax again the 2 pages (OMB[masked]) with the top margin written: Oct. 4 Petroglyph Tour.

    September 16

    • alvint

I faxed mine yesterday and sent a copy to Digne via email. Has Peggy received our faxes?

      September 19

    • Digne

Peggy has received everyone's faxes. One of us needs to refax with all the info filled-in.

      September 19

  • Mimi S.

I'd like to share a room at the Quality Inn, preferably with another female person. Please get in touch if interested =)

    • Mimi S.

Sounds good, Christy. I'll handle the booking. Can you send me your full name and address, offline (not sure if they'll want any other ID info, but will let you know), so you can access the room if you arrive before me? Click on my name here and in the pop-up window which follows, and then look for a tiny "message" icon, below my name, to send me a private email.

      September 14

    • Christy

Ok I'll send it to you this evening. Thanks!

      September 18

  • Jerome

Just want clarification...Are we to fax the 2nd app to you, Digne...???

    September 15

    • Digne

Just email it to me. I just want to know if it's the correct one.

      September 15

  • Digne

Just a clarification: there are 2 Navy forms: the one we filled-out weeks ago (already submitted), and the Dept. of Navy Local Population ID/Card Base Access Pass Registration that gets faxed before Thu.

    September 15

  • Digne

This Thu. is the last day for the Navy applications. Anyone still thinking about going better contact me before then or else there's no chance of getting on. Also, I have one more spot in my car for a rider along 580.

    September 15

  • Jerome

Ok, finally got it printed..I will complete and fax to both..Thanks for your advise and suggestions...:-) See everybody on the 3rd..Another Digne production...!!!!

    1 · September 13

  • Mimi S.

I was able to open the form by right-clicking on the notice which appeared in place of the file, after a few minutes. I could complete the form in Adobe Acrobat and print it with all entered data visible.

    1 · September 13

  • Mimi S.

THanks to a note from Digne, I just realized, we all fax our applications to Peggy, with a copy to DIgne. Hmmm... I wonder, do we send pictures of our ID’s with the app, or just bring them to the site?

    September 13

    • Digne

The app needs to be printed so you can sign it, then fax it. Just bring you picture ID with you to the Navy base.

      September 13

  • Jerome

Is this a two file, muti page app...??? I can open the 2nd file, (Rec_App_Final_[masked] final) but not the first (Sec_Navy,_Naws_PAO.pdf)..Thanks...

    September 13

    • Digne

Have you tried moving the file to your desktop, the opening it?

      September 13

  • Digne

The Rec Pass Final is already filled-out, and the Navy already have it. Is everyone else having trouble opening SECNAV file? Let me know.

We've seen graffiti: Marin Headlands and Pt. Richmond. We've seen wall murals: Mission PhotoWalk. We've seen renegade art: Albany Bulb. This meetup is pre-historic: Petroglyphs <10,000 y.o.; seen throughout the world from Celtic to Australian Aborigines.

  • Mimi S.

Too bad! I'm good for October 3–4 and glad to share driving and hotel for the new dates. I hope most people can make it without too much of a shake-up.

    September 5

  • Nancy H.

OK Clay and I can do Oct 4th and would have room for 3 into the site.

    September 5

  • Digne

I'm sorry to announce the bad news: the Navy just cancelled our Petroglyph tour. Because of recent international conflicts they're raising the Base security level and restricting public access. However, they're offering other dates, Oct. 4, Nov. 1,8,22, and 29. Additional paperwork is now required. I can do Oct. 4th, moon waxing gibbous 73.5%. Let me know what you think.

    September 5

  • Digne

This is the route I usually take from I-5 to Ridgecrest. There are several ways to get through Bakersfield but 58 works for me; then 14 to 178. I've taken 58 to 178 over the mountains a long time ago. It may be more scenic but will take more time. https://www.google.com/maps/@35.501779,-118.6440685,10z/data=!4m2!6m1!1szge4eg-oekCI.kccwo9zySJLs

    August 20

    • Digne

There's a tricky part of 58 that goes through Bakersfield. At one point you have to get on 99 for a half-mile or so, then exit for 58. Easy to miss.

    • Jerome

Mimi, if I can get your location, departure time, etc..I will drive to you and park my car...Thanks for sharing your ride...:-)
