Angel Island on Bikes - rescheduled

Dust-off your bike, pump-up the tires, start riding it (or borrow one) to prepare for this meetup because we're going to Angel Island! It is a jewel of a State park in the Bay, mostly undeveloped except for park facilities and decommissioned military buildings. Taking the Tiburon ferry to Ayala Cove we'll disembark with our bikes (can be rented for $40/day). The island has a paved 5-mile perimeter road that is perfect for biking to the ruins and historic buildings. On the route is the historic immigration station (will skip), Ft. McDowell, buildings in arreseted decay, several military batteries, Camp Reynolds... along with spectacular views of the Bay.

Take the 11:00am Tiburon ferry to Angel Island ($13.50 + $1.00/bike r/t; no advance sales, only cash/checks, no credit cards) or San Francisco or Vallejo ferries  to Angel Island. We’ll have about 5-hrs. of biking, shooting, lunch on the road, then back to the Cove for the 5:20pm, last ferry back to Tiburon; check with SF/Vallejo ferries return. No "Show & Tell" on this meetup. Rain reschedules to the following Sunday.

I suggest having a bike to work on your packing arrangement: camera gear, tripod, lunch, water, wind breaker a must... so that it’s compact, well secured, and doesn’t hamper your bike operation. The bike route is fairly moderate but for beginners like myself there were a few places I had to walk my bike up a slight incline. You should practice riding your loaded bike to troubleshoot any potential problems.

The sign-up sequence is: RSVP, and pay meetup fee. About 7 days before meetup I will request confirmation and contact info (full legal name, cell#, emergency contact person and their tel.#.) if I don't get it in 5 days I will take you off the RSVP list and offer your spot to those on the Waiting List. Also, please acknowledge the Release of Liability form in Discussions folder that you will sign when we meet on Angel Island.

Itinerary:

Take 11am ferry to Angel Island, arrive 11:20; disembark and meet across from bike rental shop. Get orientated, meet and greet. 11:30 take-off.

Skip Immigration Station because it's been cleaned-up, filled with exhibits and (gasp!) painted.

Fort McDowell. There are two areas of interest: the abandoned 3-story hospital and barracks/mess hall area.

Skip Nike site - nothing there but steel doors. Quick stop at Battery Drew.

Camp Reynolds, gather at picnic tables along the brick building for lunch. Water and restrooms available. Shoot historic buildings, dock, garden, geese, tree trunks, etc. Leave 4:00.

Quick stops at Batteries Wallace and Ledyard. Leave 5:00 for 5:20 Tiburon ferry. Those who have ferries to SF or Vallejo may have to leave earlier.

What made the meetup memorable: exploring the big boiler room and the adjacent rooms with a headlight.
Some lessons I'd share: don't ignore the "Danger, unsafe structure" sign if the building is made out of rotten wood.

We got into several places normally closed-off. Photos coming-up. Good small group. They didn't complain too much about my "shortcuts".

FYI I noticed this on the Ferry website about Angel Island.

    Helmet Policy
For your safety, Angel Island State Park requires each bicycle rider to have and wear a helmet.
