Historic 16th Street Oakland Train Station

Note: RSVPs will open, Saturday October 20 @ 2pm. Space is limited to 15 photographers. Plan to arrive on site by 2pm.

To those Urban Explorers that have attended the past open meetup at this location, you may have had to deal with various poster board stands, linked fencing, and/or crowds getting in the way of your shots. Not to mention you were limited (within the building) to just shooting the main room past the entrance.

After speaking to the property manager at the event, we are looking in setting up a special access event to this location for up to 15 AUE photographers, on Sunday, October 28 from 2:30pm to 4:30pm (plan to be on site there at 2pm to go over safety protocol, do's and don'ts, and handle misc details before we get access). Gates will close at 2:30pm and the property manager will not open them afterwards - so plan to arrive well in advance around 2pm and plan for potential traffic!

From the initial information I was told, you would be given access to the main hall, ancillary rooms (this is the area highlighted around the green dots), front plaza area, including the signal tower area on the north side of the building and access to the south side of the building. The rear of the building with the elevated tracks is strictly off limits and the property manager will be on-site to monitor that this is enforced. The baggage claim is also off limits, though if this event is a success he may talk to his manager/association to open the other two portions for a similar event. The second story balcony area is above the baggage claim and he mentioned that would be off limits. The signal tower on the north side is boarded up and there is no access inside of it.

Please bring a headlamp/flash light as some rooms can be dark, and please be considerate to others taking pictures when using your light source to navigate around.

The property manager wants to remind us that pictures for this event should be be used for personal photography purposes and NOT for commercial/money-making purposes. No models will be allowed on-site for this event.

Thanks for setting this up Dylan. You did a great job and this was a great meetup. I look forward to meeting AUE shooters again.

That was a good event yesterday. Unlike most people, I was shooting video (my films often address decaying urban environments). It was much better than the benefit event, not as much human traffic interfering with me working, got much better material this time...some stuff that I didn't even expect. Those adjoining rooms were awesome.

    Dylan,
Fantastic event. You did a wonderful job working with Marcus to pull this off. Tom & I really enjoyed it and loved the opportunity to photograph in the dark rooms and alcoves. Thank you!!

Thank you Dylan! It was so great to be able to explore the others rooms. I probably should have spent more time outside but....next time :-)

Out of all the meetup events/groups I have ever attended, that was a first where every single attendee showed up in advance prior to start time! I want to thank you guys all for that and hope you guys got the shots you were looking for. I apologize if I had to play police and round you guys up as we were going over our designated time of 4:30pm. Though overall I think it was good, no one got locked out or hurt, and those of you that are going next week to the 16th/Campbell building I hope for a similar successful event. Thanks all!

    Final update:

To the 15 that are RSVPed as yes, I hope you received the e-mail message with the attached liability waiver form to fill + print out and bring to the event. This is your ticket in, and as another reminder please try to arrive in advance prior to 2:30pm. Thanks!

    Dylan,
Thank you so much for organizing this meetup and for hanging in there to get a date and then to get the RSVP software to work.
Question for you - will we be able to go upstairs or only the rooms on the ground floor? Marj

    October 21, 2012

    • Tom & Marj G.

I found a diagram of the building and just posted it to the photo album from our last meetup there. It's part of the plan for the 're-use' of the building if the Foundation can raise the funds. I'm not sure if it's a diagram of the way the building is today, but....hopefully this will be of help for the meetup next weekend. It look like the upstairs is a big open area, which might be interesting to shoot. Also, I'm hoping we can get into the baggage area, the restrooms, and the mechanical rooms. I know we can't go near the tracks, but I'm hoping these areas will not be blocked off. Marj

      October 21, 2012

    • Dylan

I just spoke to him this morning, and I updated the meetup details with the diagram he provided. Essentially if this event is a success, he will try and get in touch with his manager to open the remaining portions of the property (tracks, rear, baggage, etc.) for a possible future event.

Did you receive two e-mails, one from PayPal and one from Meetup of confirmation of your payment? I have yet received an e-mail on my end for the last RSVP confirmation.

Hmm I was mistaken I guess. I will try the waitlist. Thanks.

    Update 3:

I apologize that the RSVPs for this event that didn't go out at the specified time. Both events were my first ever as an organizer for a meetup group, and trying to become familiar with the interface was a new experience (essentially for this meetup I set the RSVPs to open at 2pm however on the RSVP list I had previously closed it and didn't "RE-OPEN" it prior to when RSVPs would go online).

In regards of the last minute notice in scheduling/finalizing the details for the event, believe me I made calls twice a week to both property managers for the past couple week with an e-mail in between to try and finalize both event locations. The 16th Street property manager was occupied with some wedding venues and other events this past week at the location and wasn't able to really get back to me with concrete details/information until this past Friday.

    October 20, 2012

    • Dylan

In regards of the costs associated to both events, the cost is strictly going towards covering the property owner for their time providing access/monitoring for the duration of the event, the property manager's association/corporation that most likely will help assist in funding for the protection/restoration for both buildings, and the 2.9% + $0.30 paypal transaction fee meetup charges (which explains the oddball payment amount for the event). The Art of Urban Explorer host (Digne) who provides out of pocket expenses to host this meetup group, nor I one of the organizers are getting a single cent for our time to organize these two specific events. I just wanted to make the payment amount clear as it is kind of a new thing for the meetup group and myself.

      October 20, 2012

    • grahame p.

Thank you for all your work arranging this. A late RSVP really wasn't a big deal. Also it seemed clear from previous notes that the cost was going to the property owner but thanks for the details.

  • Tom & Marj G.

Dylan - we have 2 guests who would like to come. If there aren't more signups, will you open it for guests and send out a message to let us know?

    October 20, 2012

    • Dylan

I think it's very possible. If there are some openings lingering about by Tuesday evening, the easiest route to keep track would be for them to personally create a meetup account and/or join this meetup and RSVP individually to make the payment.

      October 20, 2012

  • grahame p.

RSVP for the 16th and Campbell is online now.

In all fairness please set a new start time so people can go about their day...

    October 20, 2012

  • Clayton H.

    Doesn't seem so.

    October 20, 2012

  • Xan

I kind of like having it the same time. It opens the possibility that 30 can go once instead of 15 going twice.

    October 19, 2012

  • Tom & Marj G.

Dylan - having both meetups (16St Station & Campbell Bldg) open for RSVP at exactly the same time tomorrow makes it difficult to sign up for both. Any consideration for making one open at 2pm and the other at 2:30 or 3:pm??

    October 19, 2012

    • Dylan

I can make the change 2 and 230pm when i get back. I wasnt sure if rsvping also charges guests, so i put it at 0 guests. If you can verify or know if it does, you avoid creating two accounts to rsvp.

      October 19, 2012

    • Tom & Marj G.

Tom signed up as his own account so that we could both try to get in the 14 openings. Let's just leave it at no guests to make things simpler. If you decide to change to allow 'guests' who are also photographers, let us know. Marj

Just an idea, could you book 2 meetup dates? It seems there's much more than 15 people interested. Can we also eliminate guests so that meetup members have a chance to go?

    October 2, 2012

    • Dylan

Marj, I wish I could give an exact ETA. I am still waiting on proposal responses with the details from both managers. I am assuming they are both putting this together outside their normal work schedules so it may be taking a little longer than anticipated. Whenever I get the details I will be sure to update! -Dylan

      October 5, 2012

    • Dylan

I am unsure if people that RSVP with a guest will be charged an additional payment amount. So I currently put this at 0 guests at signup. Can someone verify this before RSVPs open?

      October 19, 2012

  • Dylan

    Update 2:
Date is finalized next Sunday, October 28 at 2pm. RSVPs will open tomorrow Saturday, October 20 at 2pm. Payment is required to RSVP. Please read and be aware of the refund policies and schedule to arrive WELL IN ADVANCE NOT on time.

  • sallie l.

I have wanted to photograph the train station since Will and I drove past it last Spring. I hope the date works for us.

    October 2, 2012

  • Dylan

Update #1: I spoke on the phone with the property manager today. First, he mentioned that we may need to cut our numbers down to around 15 people to AVOID having to provide some 2 million dollar insurance for this event. That would translate to around ~$33 per person. I have no prior experience obtaining insurance for an event like this nor have an idea of what that cost may be. Second, he wanted to make it clear again that all the inside rooms, front plaza, and sides would be available to shoot. The rear and anything past the fence would strictly be off limits. He would have an on-site monitor during the event to make sure we followed those rules.

Third, I take it most of us are doing this for personal, non-commercial purposes. The property manager seemed hesitant about having models, so ideally this event we hope to keep it for personal photography purposes with no models.

    October 2, 2012

    • Tom & Marj G.

      Yes - we'll go for the $33/each

      October 2, 2012

    • Digne

Like the benefit, we had to sign a Liability release in order to gain access, and they easily had more than 15 people inside. I'd be willing to sign one again to increase the limit and lower the entry fee. Insurance is a deal-breaker.

      October 2, 2012

  • Xan

I'm in. Unable to RSVP tho. Last two weekends in oct work

    October 2, 2012

  • Tom & Marj G.

    Hi Dylan,
Tom & I are definitely coming regardless of the date or cost so please add us to the list. We also have 6 other photographer friends who want to come. I'm not sure I understand about signing up. Can we sign up now? Do we have to wait until you have a date?

    October 2, 2012

  • Thad

Love to join but Meetup says RSVPs are closed. I went Sat and was disappointed that the only room open had been gentrified by HBO last year. Still it is a wonderful building. What is the rule about models coming to events. I know a model that is interested in urban photography.

    October 2, 2012

    • Dylan

Thad, I will open the RSVPs once I have the pricing and date secured. I am not sure if there is any rule about models coming to events and it could probably vary per event being organized. This particular event since we are limiting RSVPs to 25 individuals, limited to a 2 hour time frame, and wanting to try and keep the costs down from just renting out the time/space, there probably won't be any modeling at this event. However to be fair we all have different photography interests, if you would like to personally shoot a model at this event, he/she may have to RSVP separately/individually for this event and you could be free to photograph them then. I think the main focus of this event will be photographing as much of the location as we can given the limited time frame we have.

      October 2, 2012

    • Thad

Understood. I typically like to scout a place prior to bringing a model along, but Saturday didn't give me much of a chance to really check the building out. THanks for the input.

      October 2, 2012

  • Fred C

Please add me to the list. Thx

    October 2, 2012

  • scott c.

I'm very interested. Depending on final date will determine if I can go. I really hope I can make it. Sounds like a great space. Sharing cost is more than fair & $20 to even as much as $30 is certainly reasonable. I've never been inside.

    October 2, 2012

  • Howard

I would love to attend this event, and would not have a problem sharing the cost. I was out of town for the last one. Please add me to the wait list. Thanks...

    October 2, 2012

  • grahame p.

Thanks for all the work on this. It was a great location.

    October 2, 2012

  • Francis

can you add me to the waiting list?! please and thank you.

    October 2, 2012

    • Dylan

Once I have the finalized date and price, I will open this meetup event for RSVPs and you will then have to RSVP on this page like everyone else interested in attending the event. If there are more than 25 already RSVP-ed, you will be automatically added to the waiting list.

      October 2, 2012

  • Janet

Myself + 1 are very much interested as we were unable to attend the first time.

I saw the other building as well, old brick one right? It looked good as well.

    October 2, 2012

    • Dylan

Yes, it has about 3-4 levels with a basement. Lot of cool graffiti that hasn't been cleaned up yet. Some dark areas would definitely require the use of a headlamp or some light source. We were told that the location has been really under tighter security due to reported thefts of copper.

      October 2, 2012

    • Laura L

      Damn copper thieves!
