The Headlands mainly rugged coastline and hilly terrain (200' elev. gain) have abandoned WWII-era military fortifications (Batteries) that were meant to protect the bay area but not one shot was ever fired at the enemy. Today these Batteries, long abandoned, are an urban explorers playground with mysterious rooms, odd concrete forms, steps to nowhere, etc. The military architecture juxtapose with the open landscape also presents many photo opportunities. See preview album.
At my count there area 14 Batteries, military fortifications in the Headlands but we’ll hike to 3 plus 2 other odd structures. Members who sign-up must be prepared for 4 miles of hilly terrain, on the moderate scale of effort, and spectacular cliff-edge ocean views.
The meet-up will consist of 2-3 stops and the ever popular “Show & Tell” part where we eat/drink/relax and show our recent UrbEx images. The schedule is shoot from 2:00-5p, Show & Tell 5-6p. This is our typical small nimble group for tough conditions; most should be experienced in past Urban Exploration meet-ups though first-timers are always welcomed. If you get on a waiting list just be patient because there's always a few RSVP dropouts when nearing the take-off date. However, drop-outs within the last week are frowned upon because those on the waiting lists usually have made other plans by then. Rain reschedules meetup to following Sunday.
The sign-up sequence is: RSVP, and pay $5 meetup fee. About 7 days before meetup I will request confirmation and contact info (full legal name, cell#, emergency contact person and their tel.#) if I don't get it in 3 days you will lose your spot to those waiting. Also, please acknowledge the Release of Liability form in Discussions tab on Home page that you will sign when we meet at the initial gathering point.
