Arts New Mexico Message Board › Call for Artists - TEDxABQ
I am contacting you regarding a project I am working on with TEDxABQ (http://tedxabq.com/).... As part of the audience engagement portion of the September 7th TEDxABQ conference at Popejoy Hall, we will be staging a pop-up studio salon where selected artists will be invited to setup a workspace and create a piece (or pieces) the day of the event. Previous TEDxABQ events, including last year’s main conference at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, have sold out, and it is anticipated that this 2000-seat event will sell out as well. This will be an excellent opportunity for participants to engage with the Albuquerque community, make connections, and gain exposure to potential new collectors.
TED is a nonprofit organization that stages national and international events that center on sharing “ideas worth spreading” through inspiring talks and presentations about varied and diverse topics. (Check out TED’s award winning website to view some of these talks. http://www.ted.com/...) Created in the spirit of TED’s mission, the TEDx program is designed to give communities, organizations, and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at a local level. TEDx events occur on every continent (even Antarctica), and are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis. Since 2010, TEDxABQ has hosted over 50 community events and continues to grow and reach an ever-expanding audience.
The pop-up studio salon will be located in the walkway leading from Redondo Road (the road in front of the bookstore paralleling Central Ave) to Popejoy Hall. The theme of the event is “Be Extra___” (as in extraordinary, but fill in your own extra: extra-adventurous, extra-detailed, extra-bold), and projects should relate to this theme. Because TED is about new and inventive ideas that surprise and engage audiences and stimulate dialogue, projects outside of the “traditional” box are encouraged, though they must be appropriate for an all-ages audience. We are seeking artists who can actively create a piece (or pieces) in the time frame of the event while engaging with TEDxABQ participants. Individuals, collaborations, and organizations are welcome to submit proposals. Projects that require or promote interaction with TEDxABQ attendees are encouraged. Artists must be able to bring all of their own supplies, including display setups, though some minor accommodations may be made. Because this event is outdoors, access to electricity is limited. Artists are also welcome to bring preexisting work to show during the event, as well as any promotional materials and contact information they may wish to share with TEDxABQ attendees.
Those interested in participating are asked to submit a short project proposal by email, with “TEDxABQ Open Studio” in the subject line, to email@example.com, including the intended concept, how it relates to the “Be Extra___” theme, medium, and space requirements, by Friday, July 26th. Submissions should include 5-7 examples of related work, the participating artists’ CV, and contact information; total file size should not exceed 3 MB. There is no entry fee, as selected artists will be considered volunteers. Projects will be selected by a panel of TEDxABQ volunteers based on artists’ concepts, the amount of space available, and the submitted work examples. Notifications will be sent by email by August 9th. For more information, contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please share this information with any outstanding local artists that you think would be a good fit for this event.
