The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

For January we will be reading the Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling.

When Barry Fairbrother dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…. Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town’s council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? Blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults.

There is no charge for the meetup, but the venue asks that we purchase refreshments from them.

takes a long time to engage the reader. I think it shows how flawed humans can be. A lot of characters to follow which contributes to the length and complexity of the book.

I liked the book. I enjoy following multiple characters and I liked the political aspect.

Given the forecast and the current downpour, I think it would be best to reschedule tonight's meeting. We will meet on Thursday, 1/31 at Battery Park Book Exchange.

The meeting will be in the fiction section at the usual time.

Please update your RSVP if you cannot make it on the new date. :)

Sometimes there are last minute cancellations, you should check back closer to Thursday. Also we are having a second meeting for this book next week if you don't get in this group.
