Pho So 1 - Vietnamese Lunch in Van Nuys

For Vietnamese food, I can't encourage the hip or trendy.  I always go back to the tried and true--the restaurants that are neighborhood joints rather than upscale affairs.

Though I love, love, love Pho, my go-to test bowl is Bun Bo Hue, which is distinguished by its inclusion of ham hocks and cubes of coagulated pig's blood.  The pork broth is spicier than the sweetness of beef both.  And the noodles are thicker udon-like strands.  This dish requires agility, especially if you want to get as much as you can from the ham hock.  I inevitably use my hands.

Bun Bo Hue

Everyone's first love:  Pho.

Grilled beef/pork and vermicelli for wrapping.

French-inspired beef stew with rice noodles.

If you ask me, these rice-paper wrapped rolls below are so much better than the Chinese eggroll.  My grandma used to dip the rice sheets in beer to soften them before wrapping.  Mmmmm.

THIS RESTAURANT IS A ***CASH ONLY*** RESTAURANT.  Please bring at least $20 with small bills to expedite bill pay.

We will not be eating family-style as a rule, but we will still have one group check.   Folks are welcome to order appetizers for splitting.

Let's try the Pho place directly across from Pho So 1. I think you mentioned that you liked it, Sally. Pho 999, right? I'll set up something for September. :)
