Here are the details for this Saturday

We will break off into 2 teams. Joo and Jenny will be leading TEAM HELLO KITTY (THK) for all the beginner hikers. And for the more advanced hikers, and for those without a clue yet, I'll be leading TEAM POWER RANGERS (TPR)

Breakfast ends at 11 AM on Saturday. So I want both teams to meet up no later than 10:15 AM at the Top of the Notch restaurant.

Team Power Rangers will start the hike at exactly 6 AM. For most of us, that means waking up early and making sure we have plenty of time to drive there and find parking. Don't be late! We can't wait and won't wait because we need to meet up with Team Hello Kitty by 10:15 AM. If you feel like 4 hours is way too much time for this hike, and rather sleep in longer, feel free to speak up. I'm just trying to give us more than enough time to hike one mile uphill per hour with some rest time in between. But just be aware that we will take the most serious trail up the summit on the Ski Hut Trail from Manker Flats. We will start approximately 6,000 ft. and gain 3,900 vertical feet in the next 4.2 miles. This calculates to an impressive 928 ft of elevation gain per mile. To put this in perspective, when you hike Mt. Whitney, while you go much farther and higher, your elevation gain is only 563 ft per mile. In other words, this is a very strenuous hike, and almost all uphill!

Directions for Team Power Rangers

To get to the trailhead: Take the 210 east to Baseline Road (exit 52). Turn left at the light at the end of the ramp on to Baseline Road. Make the next right on to Padua Avenue. Drive 1.7 miles and turn right onto Mount Baldy Road (there will be a traffic light). Continue 7 miles up Mount Baldy Road through Mount Baldy Village (where there is a visitor center) and follow the road for another 4.4 miles up the mountain past Manker Flats Campground to the bottom of Falls Road on the left. Park along Mount Baldy Road, display an adventure pass, and begin hiking up Falls Road.

Trailhead address: Mount Baldy Road & Falls Road, Angeles National Forest, Mount Baldy, CA 91759
Trailhead coordinates:[masked], [masked]

As for Team Hello Kitty, you'll be taking the ski lifts to the summit and meeting Team Power Rangers at the Top of the Notch restaurant for breakfast buffet at 10:15 AM. I imagine you'll want to gather at the base of the chair lifts to space out enough time (2 hours) to rendevous with Team Power Rangers at the appointed time. But I'll leave fine prints to both Joo and Jenny.

After our delicious breakfast buffet, we have the following options. Some of us can look around, take some photos, and do some short hikes around the summit. Some of us may decide to hike back down the entire way. Well, for me, I'll be taking the chair lift option to get back. The steep trail back down will be brutal on your knees and that's no good for the snowboarding season! But we can discuss all the options in detail over breakfast!

I will be posting a more clear description of our advanced hike to the Mt. Baldy summit from the base. But for now, here is what my group can expect after we split into two groups. MY GROUP WILL NOT ELECT TO TAKE THE SKI LIFTS EVEN A PARTIAL WAY UP TO THE SUMMIT. Instead, we will take the shorter, steeper route via the ski hut trail to the summit. Along the way, we will pass the San Antonio falls, traverse the ski hut trail for 4 miles at a 4,000 ft elevation gain, and stop by the ski hut along the way. The weather should be cooler and a bit cloudy so that's the good news. The not so favorable news is that this we will have to start much earlier. We will grind up through many switchbacks for a intense workout and proceed at a fast clip to catch up at a reasonable time with the second group for breakfast. KEEP IN MIND, PEOPLE USE THIS TRAIL TO TRAIN MT. WHITNEY. So make sure you take into account your physical health and condition. And bring lots of water and energy bars!

Alan, if you can come join us, we'll see you there!

Thanks Jay, but unfortunately, it is a no go for me. Will be a little busy tomorrow. Maybe another time when my schedule isn't hectic.

      October 5, 2012

  • Jay

For Team Hello Kitty, you'll most likely be meeting at the chair lifts. The address is 8401 Mt. Baldy Rd., Mt. Baldy, CA. Joo and Jenny can decide what time to meet there. This should be a group effort so help them out by looking into some of the fun activities your group can do before meeting us. Please go there with some suggestions rather than just showing up. Both groups will be meeting later at 10:15 AM at the restaurant to have breakfast together.

I'll be expecting a total of 5 people on my team (TPR) for an early hike at 6 AM tommorrow morning. Thank you guys for confirming that in your RSVP as instructed. We will start at 6 AM so don't be late! Like I said, we have a set time to rendevous with Team Hello Kitty by 10:15 AM. However, if anyone feels that we can steep hike in less than 4 hours, this is your chance to speak up now. Personally I think we'll be able to push 3 hours but I want to give us more than enough time. Any feedback or suggestions now is welcome! Otherwise we'll start at 6 AM.

    October 5, 2012

    • Jay

I just posted the directions for where to meet tommorrow at 6 AM. Please make sure you take a look.

Hey fellas, I'll just bring up the matter of whether an Adventure Pass is required just this one last time. Even if someone told us that we don't need one, I would still recommend that you bring one. There's a reason why everyone that hikes there brings one. I've been there before and the parking gets full quickly. Getting over there at 6 AM may sound early, but it's not. Lots of people, especially the older folks, start early before it gets too hot. So if it gets too crowded, you'll need to find street parking which does require an Adventure Pass. Secondly, it's better to be safe than sorry and not have to bother with the inconvenience of not having one with you. It's only $5, and even if you don't need it, you can save it for next time. But hey, this is only one person's suggestion. In the end you are responsible for what happens to your car.

Well im planning to hike and before hike will be breakfast first . But is any one has extra voucher for the breakfast ?

    October 2, 2012

Hey Enrico, are you still looking for a voucher for the breakfast? I can sell you mine if you need one.

Just received email confirmation from Mt Baldy. An Adventure Pass is NOT needed. Thanks.

    1 · October 3, 2012

    • Marty

Update: you do not need the pass if you park at the parking lot at the end of Mt. Baldy Road.

      October 3, 2012

  • rico

So according to marty , as he said no need adventure pass ? Is that mean we all can park closely to the meeting spot without the adventure pass ?

    • Jay

      Much appreciated!

      October 3, 2012

  • Jay

Everyone, for details of our plan for this Saturday, please look at my update that I just posted in the event description. Once you have taken all that in, please indicate in your RSVP whether you're part of Team Hello Kitty (THK) or Team Power Rangers (TPR). If you don't indicate which team you are on, I'll assume you're on THK. If you are on my team, you'll want to put down TPR in your RSVP so I can send you further details of our hike by email. And more importantly, I'll know exactly how many of us to expect before we start our hike.

    October 3, 2012

    • Lisa K

you are so mean, Jay. I don't want to be part of no Team Hello Kitty. Why can't there be a 3rd option in between? Middle ground? I refuse to type THK! >|

      meow!!!! *fft *ffft

      October 3, 2012

  • Jay

You'll want to park close to the start of the trail which is about 2.7 miles from the ski lifts area. I was going to send detailed directions to those who confirmed with TPR in his or her RSVP. But let me just say, if you are on my team and doing this hike, get the Adventure Pass. It's only $5 and not worth the inconvenience of parking over 2.5 miles away and possibly getting a very expensive parking ticket. However, if you are just riding the chair lifts, I'm assuming that you don't need the Adventure Pass. To see how far apart these two areas are, go to http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Mount+Baldy+Road+%26+Falls+Road,+Angeles+National+Forest,+Mount+Baldy,+CA+91759&daddr=8401+Mt.+Baldy+Rd.+,&hl=en&sll=34.24998,-117.63867&sspn=0.001783,0.004117&geocode=FULcCgIdPCj9-Cl9pWHisz7DgDGlgN1PnbYOGw%3BFfucCgId9Pn8-CmhFEedVznDgDGhEWhWFb8YgA&mra=ls&t=m&z=15.

    October 3, 2012

  • Jay

By the way, each car will require an Adventure Pass. So make sure you pick one up. YOU DON'T WANT TO PARK YOUR CAR THERE WITHOUT ONE! The parking tickets are very expensive.

    October 2, 2012

    • Alan

Jasmine: see my comment below on the pass.

      October 2, 2012

    • YY

Thank you, Alan. I will see u on Sat. Enjoy your day!!

      October 3, 2012

  • Joo Hong K.

Carpool: Realized that I don't have to be there early because I am not doing the tough hiking. For those of you, who are not doing hiking, I will pick someone up at the Rosemead around 8:45 AM. I have two more spot. Let me know, if you want carpool.

I don't need gas money and I don't want parking money. Just show up ontime because I won't wait very long. Probably leave by 8:50. Earlier, if everyone show up.

    October 3, 2012

  • rico

And do i have to get the adventure pass ? How much is it if i may know and where i can get it from , guys ?

    October 2, 2012

    • Kim P.

Enrico....you can get at Big 5

      October 2, 2012

    • Alan

Sporting good stores: Big 5, REI, Sport Chalet, etc. $30 for annual pass, and $5 more for 2nd vehicle annual pass. So best to get 2 ppl together and split the cost. Else, for 1 day, it will be $5.

    October 2, 2012

@Jay - Hey Jay! Are we doing a hike after breakfast or only the hike before? Personally, after an All You Can Eat breakfast, I'd rather do a hike after eating to work it off. Just my preference, but I'll go with the flow. For the challenging hike, what time do we need to be at the mountain by? Thanks!

    October 2, 2012

If you purchased a voucher, make sure you redeem it online. You'll need to print it out and bring it with you to the ticket office at Mt. Baldy. On another note, the weather this weekend is supposed to be much cooler at Mt. Baldy than the heat we've been getting recently. This will be a very good time to get our last intensive workout hike before the snowboarding season!

    October 1, 2012

  • TRACEY N.

I can't make it that week. Will be in NW for Hotair Balloon Festival. I already purchased the voucher, not sure if it is transferable!

    Damn, I wish I didn't miss out on that $17 deal =\

    September 29, 2012

  • Jay

I am still recovering so I will need to postpone this tentatively for Saturday, October 6. As long as both Kim, Jenny, and Joo can make that date, we'll set it for that date. Besides my recovery, there are logistical considerations that have opened up now that we have more members signed up. As I said, this can either be a very strenuous hike with potential for injury or harm or just simply spending a nice day at Mt. Baldy and enjoying breakfast. My original intention was to do both but now that doesn't seem realistic and I'm not comfortable with putting anyone in harm's way. So most likely we'll need to split in two groups. One group will do the intensive 10 mile hike with steep elevation gain and the other group will do more of the scenic, leisurely hike around while using the chair lifts. But both groups will meet to have breakfast together. So postponing this will give us more time to arrange it this way and have a much safer trip.

    September 8, 2012

    • Joo Hong K.

Kim, Mt. Baldy voucher is still available online. You should buy the voucher.

      1 · September 12, 2012

Everyone, this deal is still available although over 3,600 people bought it already! You should get it and spend a day with us. As suggested earlier, we'll split into two groups. One group will do the intensive hike while the other group will ride the chair lifts and look around. But both groups will meet together to have the breakfast buffet.

    September 11, 2012

    • Lisa K

okay, i listened to you, Jay, and bought it. obviously, easy group for me following Jenny.

Removing RSVP - will be in Japan month of Oct.

    September 8, 2012

As for those who are beginners in hiking, the trails here aren't for you. 1) You have to ask yourself if you will get acute mountain sickness(AMS), since we will be over 8,000ft in elevation if you are going to hike up to the peak. It won't be pretty if you get hit by AMS up there. 2) Are you prepared to hike 10 miles or so with a few thousands feet gain in elevation at 8k+ altitude. Don't forget, higher altitude = thinner air, more work to get oxygen. 3) You will likely hike slower than in lower altitude.

    September 8, 2012

    • Lisa K

thanks. this is very helpful information.

      September 8, 2012

  • Lisa K

@ Jay, are you doing a hard hike or the easy way? will hiking poles help me? i googled this hike and it sounds hard.

    September 6, 2012

    • Alan

Hiking poles will help. 1) Less pressure on the knees/hips(up to 25%), this will really save those with bad knees - especially on the way down 2) Help in balancing and you have a lot more stability. 3) You will be working out your upper body also with the poles. 4) Hopefully you will never to do this, but you can always use them as weapon!

    September 7, 2012

  • YY

Hey Jay: I don't mind to have it postponed at all. And I think I probably will pass it this time (10 miles of hiking kind big figure to me because this is gonna be my first hiking experience). And any advise would be appreciated. Thank you, Jay. =)

    September 7, 2012

    • Jack

This hike is not for beginners, if you are doing hiking for the first time, I highly recommend you to do some 1000 feet gain and 3-5 miles hike for start.

      1 · September 7, 2012

    • YY

Okay..I take your advise. Tks Jack. Have a joyful hiking to u all!!!

      September 7, 2012

  • Jay

I apologize for the delay. I just came back from a pretty rigorous hike in the Sierras and wasn't sure if I recovered yet. And the trails in Mt. Baldy are more at an intermediate and advanced levels. In any case, we have options. Our deal expires on October 28. If we do this hike this Sunday, we'll take the chair lift to the top at 8000 ft. elevation and have breakfast. After breakfast, we can just do short hikes around the restaurant and then take the chair lift back to our cars. However, we will be missing out on really exploring the trails and getting a great workout. For that, we will need to be on the trail really early in the morning and hike approximately 10 miles with over 2000 ft. elevation gain. But it will be worth it! And if we are driving all the way over to Mt. Baldy, I think we should plan on doing the long hike to the top, have the breakfast buffet at the restaurant, and take the chair lift back down. If you signed up, please state your preferences for this trip.

    September 7, 2012

    • Jay

Jack, can you suggest which trails, the distance, how long, and what time we need to start to get from our cars to the restaurant if we did that hike? If there are multiple trails, let's try to go with the more popular and scenic trails and no more than 10 miles. It could be just 10 miles one way and we just take the chair lift back on the return trip.

      September 7, 2012

    • Jack

I was thinking take the chair up, eat the food, then go up to the peak, and from there, we can choose to walk to others trails, or just stay at baldy peak and chill. I personally want to take some good pictures at the very top. I think from the ski hut taking devil's backbone walking to the baldy peak will be about 2000 gain and less than 10 miles. From baldy peak, you can go as far as you want depends on what you want to do.

Hi Jay ...I dont mind to postpone.
