Muriel Rioja This fairly rustic, gutsy Rioja offers a welcome change from New World reds in its price category. The wine shows some vaguely berry characters with floral/violet notes and a range of savoury influences including baked earth, toasted nut, star anise and some reasonably classy oak. It’s designed to be enjoyed with food and indeed is transformed into an altogether smoother and more richly textured wine with roast lamb or a medium/rare steak.
Rosaleda Jean Leon 2010 Cab Sav Red colour with blue hints. Red ripe fruits aromas combined with toasted and spices coming from its light ageing in wood. Soft and delicate palate, round tanins and long aftertaste. Ideal to go with some starters or tapas such as cured meats, grilled vegetables, cheeses. Also for some dishes like meatballs. Serving temperature: 17º C.
Temps de Flores 2010 Cataluna Penedes - The wine is a pale yellow with the greenish tones of Muscat, the light tones of Gewürztraminer, and marble tones of Xarel.lo. The aroma is fruit forward with the taste of summer fruti like melon, pear, lyche, apricot, and also floral note os jasmin, roses, orange and azalea. The combination evokes a multitude of sensations; softness, hamony, summer and tranquility. On the mouth,it is opulent, creamy, and with a bit of acidit that gives it freshness and boldness.
Ponte Da Barca Albarino Rias Paixas 2011 - 89 WS. $16. Pale yellow, brilliant colour, with hints of gold and green. In the nose they have fine, distinguished floral and fruity aromas. On the palate they are fresh and smooth, with sufficient body and degree of alcohol, balanced acidity, harmonious and with a wide range of tones.
Aroa Mutiko 2010 Navarra - Tinto Joven, or just "joven" (HO-vun), is a young wine, typically aged no more than six months and, in most parts of Spain, held in stainless steel. Mutiko's flavors are so emphatic and sunny that none of us immediately noticed the lack of oak. The Tempranillo is rich in berries, currants, cola, spices, pepper, and leather and the Merlot is so soft and fruity that the lack of that vanilla flavor isn't missed. And the texture, which would normally be the thing that suffers most from lack of oak tannins, is silky and creamy enough that it almost feels like it was oaked. HA. WHAT WILL YOU BE DRINKING?
Teofilo Reyes 2008 Ribera del Duero - rated 86 points: Fruity nose, plum, black and red currant, some citric notes (tangerine), some flower notes, a hint of tobacco. On mouth it is very friendly, a bit tannic with a medium body, an oaky aftertaste with some mushrooms and a medium finish. Shows typical Ribera notes without the typical sweety vanilla/chocolate. Good choice for casual dining.
