Werner Haag will present on Science is Elementary & Tom will debrief FreeOK

We have a jam packed agenda this week, lots of great stuff to talk about!

** Please note that we are at a NEW Round Table on Oakmead Parkway off 101 and Lawrence Expressway.

Our very own Werner Haag is going to start off the meeting with a 15 minute presentation on "Science is Elementary" - a volunteer organization that reaches 1600 local school children for once-a-month science workshops doing fun science and engineering experiments to get children enthusiastic about these fields at an early age.  This organization was founded in response to the decreasing amount of science being taught in elementary schools across the country, and has a goal to spread throughout the Bay Area and beyond. Werner believes that such programs help reduce the susceptibility of children to irrational thinking.

Werner graduated from M.I.T. and has a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Univ. of Tennessee.  He worked for 10 years in basic research studying the fate of chemicals in the environment and in water treatment, then worked 25 years in industry with manufacturers of air & water treatment systems, and instruments to measure hazardous gases in the workplace.  Werner is also a high school wrestling coach, and enjoys orienteering, mountaineering, and ballroom dancing.

After a good discussion on this topic, Tom Nowitzky will give us a debrief on his trip to Oklahoma for the Freethought Convention they had last month - FreeOK!

I enjoyed the debriefing very much. There should be more such programs. On TV now there is Bill Nye, the Science Guy, and in my day (ancient history) there was a man named Don Herbert, A.K.A. Mister Wizard, who got a lot of kids interested in science. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watch_Mr._Wizard There should be more of that today, too.

I actually used to watch Mr. Wizard's World early in the mornings back in the early 90s on Nickelodeon.

Just an FYI, for those who are eating at the Round Table, please bring cash. This is one of those rooms where I have to put $125 down to book it and we get to use that money for food. So essentially we have a credit but I need everyone who is eating to help pay back the $125. I think that is usually our beer tab :)

Just an update on the food choices for the Vegans in the house! Lawrence Expressway has quite a few options nearby, but Faultline Brewery is right across the street from this new location. They have a few small and large plates that are veg friendly: http://www.faultlinebrewing.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=158&Itemid=53

And who is to say we might not end the night by wandering into the pub?

They do have a delicious hummus plate!

On many occasions, Christians have said that God is just as easy for me to observe as he/she/it is for them to observe. If true, then according to Christians, God must be some real thing in this universe. When asked what real thing in this universe God is, Christians tend to waffle and can't provide an adequate answer. But if whatever they are calling God is something that myself and other freethinkers, skeptics and atheists can readily observe, then it makes these Christians really just a bunch of Pantheists - as they've merely slapped the term "God" onto something which they believe to be readily observable to all.

We all see what we want to see. Everything gets filtered through our subjective perception.

A God that does not manifest itself in reality is indistinguishable from a non-existent God.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
