San Jose Pride Event - Saturday & Sunday

We plan to have a booth at the event, handing out flyers and promoting the ACSJ. Please join the Meetup and specify which day you can be available for helping out at the booth. I am hoping we will have enough people so we can work this in shifts.

Event planned for 12-7 each day

And there was the guy who challenged me by insisting that atheism is by definition a belief system. I could only explain that it is a lack of belief. I illustrated this by asking him something like, "do you believe there is an undetectable blue turtle on the ground next to you"?

During this same discussion, it was brought up if a person doesn't hold the belief that "A" exists, does it follow that the person does hold the belief that "A" does not exist? He said it does and I had to go to extremes by bringing up an example of one who has never been introduced to the concept of "A" - and would thus not hold the belief that "A" existed without holding the belief that "A" doesn't exist.

A "polyatheist" doesn't believe many gods exist. If you don't believe in all gods, would that make you an "omniatheist" or "totatheist", or maybe a "niltheist" or "nulltheist"?

Not precisely on topic, but here's how Dale McGowan describes the difference between explicit atheism and implicit atheism. http://www.dummies.co...

We were, overall, warmly received. One person, believing a common definition of 'atheism', said (in a friendly way), "I don't have enough faith to be an atheist, being sure there is no god. I'm an agnostic." It was a pleasant conversation after that.

I can't say "thank you" enough to those who participated. You all gave everyone a glimpse of what good atheist are like. Big props to Jason for stepping in and leading the event, thank you for your dedication and hard work this weekend.

I had a lot of fun! I was later than planned and I felt bad about that, but it seems like it went well regardless. I'm glad everyone had a good time on Sunday, I wish i could have been there.

Hey guys, does anyone know who wound up with the books I left at the table this morning? Let me know!

    August 18, 2013

    • Jason G.

IPU gathered them all up. Thanks for bringing those, we had several people peruse.

Wonderful event! Lots of positive feedback from the public.

Let's consider tacky, attention-getting gimmicks for future booth events.

For example, we could have a vertical wheel of disbelief. At each stop, there would be out-of-fashion deities, bizarre pseudoscientific theories, and/or mythical creatures. Winning contestants could take home an undetectable entity or an opportunity to speak privately with, say, Xenu, the dark lord of the universe.

We definitely need to move up to the world of street festivals, music festivals or art & wine festivals.

I heard several creative ideas for future outreach events. I can a lot more of this in our future :)

This was an excellent event all round. It's hard for me to believe the quantity of positive feedback we received. I suspect our group is about to grow more!

Someone suggested we stable the cards to the pamphlets, so maybe someone could bring a stapler tomorrow. And maybe a bubble machine...

Thanks -- once I realized it was called a "QR code", it was easy :-) .

It's so fun to read your posts! I can't wait to hear all about this event. This is very inspiring!

So sorry I couldn't make it there yesterday. I look forward to actually attending a meeting soon! I hope you are all telling folks about the Sunday Assembly SV, and asking them to register on the Eventbrite site? Do you hand out the link (printed), so they won't forget and can find it easily?

BTW, I get the feeling that I'm supposed to point my Galaxy S3 camera at that glyph with the three squares in the corners and do something, and something cool would happen, but I'm not sure what or what. Please help me out here. Thanks!

Nicely done flyer, Jason! I sent one to Brian earlier today (I didn't know he's out of town), but I like yours a lot better than mine. You rock!

      August 18, 2013

  • Brian B.

A huge THANK YOU for those of you who participated in the booth today! One more day to go. You are all making a huge difference by being there as I have received several messages already. We will spend some time next meeting sharing your experience and interactions with the group.

Day #1 of this event went very well, with a great turnout! There were quite a few people who stopped by our booth either to inquire or to chat. I didn't encounter anyone who wasn't pleasant.

Some of us were discussing the Penn and Teller video about the Bible. It can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vfp6QipYV3w&feature=youtu.be

I think we may see a couple of new faces at the next meeting. Maybe even the guy from the Methodist booth that came over to tell us about how he doesn't believe and goes to church for his wife (and the social part). He took a pamphlet. :)

    5 · August 17, 2013

  • Erin U.

Today was super fun. We had a lot of ppl come up and say how awesome it was to see us there. :)

    4 · August 17, 2013

And a few nice believers as well. We had a crowd of us at one point and Erin kept me company all the way to the end :)

Light rail! Yes!! It drops you off right there, it's $2 each way, and no need to mess with parking! Get off at the Children's Discovery Museum Station on the Alum Rock/Santa Teresa line.

Booth has sun cover and there's a table and two chairs. Parking entrance near the corner of Woz and Almaden is $7. You can text or call[masked] if you need any help

Overslept a bit but I should make it before noon!

    1 · August 17, 2013

So right now the sign ups are as follows: Erin for Saturday (I'm hoping she can stay most of the day), Tim has 3-5pm on Sunday while Susan and Sean have the last shift 5-7 on Sunday. So we really need to fill up Saturday and Sunday morning. Post here if you have a shift in mind and I will sign you up. Thanks!

    1 · August 4, 2013

I'll stay as long as I can. :)

I'll be there with Saturday my son, and will spend part of the time at the booth, part walking around with him. I'm hoping to be around, say, 11-4.

I could use a ride from near downtown Sunnyvale Saturday. Email me ([masked]) -- thanks!

    August 16, 2013

  • Lisa H.

Would it be possible for me to come help at the booth first thing on Saturday? What are the shift hours.

    August 16, 2013

Here is a map for the event, we are booth B-14 http://files.meetup.com/7879852/GP13-Map-%288-6%29.pdf

Not sure if my email went through to those of you helping at the event. Quick update: We will be given two wrist bands the morning of the event, so I do not think you will be able to share them (we can try) - so you may need to purchase a ticket to the event. I can reimburse you for the ticket, as it is not very expensive. If you purchase tickets online, they are a little cheaper: http://www.sanjosepride.com/tickets/index.html

Please email me if you have questions about the event: [masked]

I am going to contact everyone individually soon to make sure everyone is on the same page for next weekend. We will also have some time to talk about it this Wednesday night at the MeetUp

I just RSVP'ed... Just let me know... We cancelled our Sunday morning coffee, so I can do Sunday morning.

      1 · August 12, 2013

  • Kori

I can be there for any shift on Sunday. Will more than one person be running the booth at once?

    August 11, 2013

    • Brian B.

Hey Kori, we plan to have 2 people at the booth at all times so we can pass the badges (passes) back and forth. Sunday morning would be perfect, those are the open spots right now.

      August 11, 2013

  • Lyn C

either day is good for me if I could work a shift that will get me out by 5pm.

    July 18, 2013

    • Brian B.

Hey Lyn, we had a sign-up sheet at the last Wednesday meeting but I was also going to bring it to the Second Harvest event this Wednesday too. I think we only had 4 sign-ups, so there are several open spots. I am going to ask people if they have extra time, to stay as long as they can. Originally it was 2 hour time slots but we may need to ask for 4 hour shifts.

      August 4, 2013

    • Lyn C

Yeah, evening meetings are kinda tough for me, so any relevant info on here would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to know if I have to prepare in any way, and where the booth will be located, and how I can help set up the booth, etc.

      August 4, 2013

  • Tim

Jason, I signed up for Sunday I thought after Susan's shift. Could you please let me know what time it was? I can't remember what exact time was.

    Thanks!

    August 3, 2013

    • Susan M.

      I'm taking the last shift, 5 to 7 p.m.

      August 4, 2013

  • Sean W.

I'll definitely be around for Sunday, maybe Saturday if I'm not busy. I've already signed up to sit with Susan for the Last Sunday shift.

    I can do Saturday.

    1 · July 21, 2013

I'd like to sign up for Sunday's final shift.
