Labor Day hiking at Big Basin

  • September 2, 2013 · 9:30 AM

The date is flexible, depending on when enough folks are available. We could do this on Saturday 8/31 or Sunday 9/1. If you'd like to go, but 8/31 or 9/1 is better for you, please indicate this in the comments. Thanks!
We'll likely do a moderate hike of 4-6 miles, possibly from Big Basin to the coast. There's a list of trails to hike at http://www.bigbasin.org/trailsother.html and a trail map at

I brought my kids and we had an excellent time even though we never met up with anyone. I must have missed on the details as the Redwood Look hike was scheduled for 11am not 9:30. I've been on the guided tour twice before though so I just took the kids and showed them the sights myself. They really loved the trees and the wildlife. Sad that I couldn't connect with folks but would definitely do it again.

This one is beginning to look like a bust, seeing as it lacks a specific meeting place.

Dan, it's easy to find the place. There's a cabin and gift shop right on the road through the park. That's were the hike begins.

Sounds reasonable. I didn't see that in the description.

Missed the last train to milbrae and had a nice hike. So not gonna make 930. Anyone is welcome to lead.

I may just head down that way for an afternoon hike. Maybe I'll see you on the trail or if other people want to go later, let me know and we can carpool :)

Folks, I won't be able to be there for a Big Basin hike on Monday. So there are a few options:
    1) Leave as is and everyone who wants to go on Monday could go - but someone would be needed to coordinate things.
    2) Change the day of the hike to tomorrow (Sunday); If there is enough interest, I could still coordinate the hike.
    3) Postpone until next week, as the turnout looks like it would be better then.

    Hi Neil,
Looking forward to the hike and getting together with another Deconverted OG. It's been too long.

I will be leading two guided tours of the Redwood Loop Trail on both 8/21 and 9/1 at 11 am and 2 pm respectively (I am a volunteer docent). The walk is not meant to be a "hike", but you learn everything there is to know about the Coast Redwoods for those who would like that option.

A hike to the coast from Big Basin is much too far to do in the time you are suggesting (about 14 miles one way). I would recommend the Pine Mountain Trail up to Buzzard's Roost as an option.

There are two places Highway 236 intersects Highway 9 as 236 is a "horseshoe" or "half moon" sort of drive; Big Basin is at the middle. I highly suggest taking the 236 connection in the town of Boulder Creek (the only stop sign) as it is a far easier drive than the other no matter what you see on the map or what gps tells you.

It costs $10 per car for all day admittance, so you may want to plan for car pooling and parking will most likely be a challenge for the last weekend of summer vacation unless you arrive early.

Not sure what my family has planned for this weekend, so my RSVP may change. Hope to make it!

Sounds fabulous but the girls and I will be in Mammoth Lake this weekend. Any chance to push it to the weekend after? I know I am asking for a lot... ;p

Instead of pushing it to the following week, I suggest another hike the following week. No reason we can't do more!

We'll discuss this at Wednesday's meeting and figure out what any interested parties wish to do.

Big Basin is awesome! During winter I hike there several times a month. It's amazing between the storms, and a huge variety of trails.

Hmm, seems pretty nice up there!

Oregon is full of trees. The whole coast gets more beautiful the farther north you go. Enjoy, Erin!

I just realized this hike is when I'll be at DragonCon. After that I will set up a few meetups for hiking I need to get back to it, so plan on going one weekend day every week.

We need to be sure we are clear on which entrance. There is the highway 1 side, or the one you get to from hwy 9. I forget what 9 leads tom 230?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
