Hidden Resources for Job-Seeking Nonbelievers

  • November 5, 2013 · 3:30 PM

The Nova Connect Job Center's orientation session on Tuesday, November 5, is already full, so we'll meet at the nearby Denny's at 3:30 instead.

The organizer for this meeting will bring examples of Nova's job-seeking tips, and we'll share information with each other so we can all make progress in our job searches. You'll be stunned at how much there is to know!

Thanks, Susan, Sean, and Caleb for the suggestions. Getting ideas from you all has been very motivating.

Super! I'm glad you found it useful. There's plenty more where that came from. :)

Would y'all still like to meet at 3:30 at Denny's? Let me know.

I'd love to meet at Denny's and sign up for orientation either before or after.

Louise, the 11/5 session is already full. Lyn, Sean, and Shaina will be coordinating a day that they can all attend together, so please coordinate with them if you can. Meanwhile, I'll change this to a 3:30 meeting at Denny's on Nov. 5. It'll be good to get together!

I just called and they said they are full for Tuesday. Not sure what happened.... Guess I will see you guys another time. :(

Oh, noooooooo!! Well, meet us there at 3:30 p.m. anyway. We can all go over to Denny's together. Go ahead and sign up for orientation. The sooner we're all registered, the sooner we can all get into ProMatch, and the sooner we can all find jobs. ProMatch will be great.

After we've all registered at Nova Connect, we can sign up for ProMatch. There's usually a waitlist; I'll have to ask them how long the wait is these days. Part of ProMatch is having what they call a "success team." It's a group of ProMatchers (usually 4 to 8 people) who meet weekly to discuss job leads, practice interviewing, and so on. Wouldn't it be great to have our own success team? I'd love that!

I fail to see how job-seeking has anything to do with non-belief...

Andrew, people differ quite widely in the relative level of importance they place in their (lack of) religious beliefs. For some people, while it may be important in some technical way, they also find comfort and solace to go about their (relatively) hum-drum everyday activities in the company of other like-minded people. This group is definitely not just about technical discussions around belief systems; it is a community for non-believers and involves much more than just technical or educational discussions or activities. Everyone is welcome to participate (or not) in whichever aspects they are interested in; hopefully everyone will also recognize that others may have differing views and will support others' individual participatory choices.

To clarify about our various activities: activities of the group should always support our mission statement which can be viewed in the footer at http://sanjoseatheist... Please note we recently amended the mission statement to replace "activism" with "education." (site will be updated soon). But don't worry, there will be another group created shortly to facilitate any activism members want to engage in. Hope this clears up any misconceptions about the group

This is an opportunity to register for their free services, so bring the documents they ask for (such as driver's license, passport, EDD determination letter if you have one).

Yes, I love ProMatch. I was in ProMatch for 4 months about two years ago and learned SO MUCH! I made some wonderful friends there, too--people I'm still in touch with. Really great folks.

I think I could be interested in this. I currently have time in the afternoon. So Susan, Do you work for Nova?

    October 24, 2013

    • Lyn C

I thought that prior relationships with these people would have helped them look past what they knew about my beliefs, but they already knew and they were not going to hire me. It's not like I am dumb enough to say, "Hi I'm Lyn, and I am an Atheist" in official job interviews. But anyways, I am not surprised if they wouldn't want to give a tour to us. :-/ Not a surprise at all.

In my email to them, I introduced us as "a philosophy discussion group." I have no idea why they haven't responded, except that they're understaffed.

I would definitely join you at this event. I am interested in finding a group of people to actively participate in job searching with. I found a group on meetup but they meet at a bad time. Plus, doing this with other atheists would be amazing.

I can meet any time except Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
