How did you find us?

In a few words or a single sentence, describe your current position with regard to religious claims (e.g. atheist, agnostic, non-believer, believer, searching believer, etc). Please be specific in order to have your membership approved.

I am an atheist. I did not make a choice to not believe in a supreme being; I came to the realization that a supreme being does not exist. I can not recall any choices that I made that steered me in that direction. It was just becoming more mature and learning about the world and other religions. I have not read the entire bible cover to cover, but the vast majority of it. There was a lot that was very disagreeable. But the preachers, ministers and priests that I heard talk downplayed most of those areas. I saw a lot of bigotry between people of different religions. I saw nice people that were very prejudiced because they were told in church that the bible says black people are inferior. I learned about Self-deception and Groupthink. I started reducing “God” more and more until it was just a common tread of morals instinctively shared by all humans; and then realized there was no supreme being left.

What types of events interest you, and what do you hope to get from the Atheist Community of San José (ACSJ)?

I have enjoyed the opportunity to hear talks from interesting and skeptical people. I liked the chance to go as a group to various community volunteer work events. I would like to hear from many of our members how they came to be an atheist, and what kind of people helped them come to this realization. Then for us to make sure we can be the type of person to guide people to rational thinking and let them know that they are not alone.

I look forward to meeting you face to face.
