I, too, feel the need to apologize to the group for what happened last night. It's unfortunate how often I'm reminded of the fact that there are so many people in the world who misrepresent the Church and what I believe. I stuck around until almost midnight last night talking with Charles and his friends, trying to do my best to help him understand why his actions were not appropriate or needed (and why so many of you left the meeting!). Big time kudos to those of you who stuck around to listen to Charles talk, by the way. Anyway, after talking with him for a while, I do genuinely believe that his intention in attending the meeting was not to stir up controversy, but that obviously doesn't excuse what happened. Anyway, I guess we'll have plenty to talk about next month! Ultimately, like it's already been said, thank you, Amy, for taking the time to share what you did. It's always good to learn something new and I'm sure we'll continue to talk about your experiences in future meetings.

Here is a link to some of the more odd beliefs of Mormons. Some are doctrinal but some are only cultural. http://www.lifeaftermormonism.net/profiles/blogs/101-nonpublic-or-weird-beliefs-of-mormons

I spent a bit of time researching him today and checking out his claims. He charges $200 a ticket to his event where he doesn't charge any money :) It appears that he started in Nigeria and spent most of hist time travelling to impoverished areas to refine his craft and raise money. His first real publicity in Denmark where he seems to have teamed up with an Allan Tind and Christian Hedegaard, the latter oversaw some of his first "meetings" in the states.

The "Skeptical Show" to which he was a guest in Denmark was entitled "Åndernes Magt," which translates to "Power of the Spirits." Skeptical indeed. It was a gathering for faith-healing with his Danish cohorts, much like the shows he's done in the past. I suppose all of the talk of travelling both reinforces his argument from authority as well as obscuring the path to verifying his information.

It should provide for a good discussion next time, I think. It's a shame that his visit overshadowed Amy's great topic as much as it did.

I'm sorry about the meeting, I don't know who that guy was...when they came in to the room I got a creepy vibe, then he talked about healing people and he was on the news....if they come back i may call the police...

You might want to order off the menu at Uno's and you will need to pay for your own food or drink.

I enjoyed Monday night at my first Meetup Atheist. The conversation on the laws about separation of church and state was very knowable, and the group was very friendly. Looking forward to the next meeting!
