Seeking candidates for a developer position with Lockheed Martin for mission-critical CDC system

From: Josh G.
Sent on: Friday, October 14, 2011 3:42 PM

Hello everyone,

I hope you are doing well and benefiting from the events and resources we post and share in this group.

I have a different kind of request this time! If you or someone you know is interested in a developer position within Lockheed Martin to work on a mission-critical project at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, please let me know.

About Epi-X

Epi-X
is the Epidemic Information Exchange, CDC's secure communication system. Epi-X is part of the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response, and within the Division of Emergency Operations.

Epi-X
's mission is to provide secure, moderated communications for public health officials to report and discuss surveillance information, disease outbreaks and acute health events including terrorism.

More about Epi-X: http://www.cdc.gov/epix

View this CDC TV video to get a feel for the overall mission that our program helps support!

For more background on Epi-X's specific mission: view this presentation

If you've seen the movie Contagion recently you can think of Epi-X as the real-world system that outbreak detectives use when reporting early warning signs and scientific data back to CDC for further review and distribution. Anthrax, SARS, H1N1, etc: Epi-X sees it all and helps prevent outbreaks from spreading!

This is an exciting opportunity to improve both your career and to help protect the nation's health and safety!

Developer Position Details

We are looking for someone to be an instrumental player in helping us complete a system rewrite, from classic ASP to ASP.NET. We are building an agile shop utilizing Scrum.

We need someone who has strong experience in ASP.NET, with both WebForms & MVC, knows jQuery, and is comfortable with both C# and VB.NET.

You should be well-versed in object-oriented development, and understand fundamental concepts of design patterns and the S.O.L.I.D. principles for building loosely-coupled, extensible, and maintainable systems. Refactoring and working with legacy code is also very important. You should know, intuitively, what the definition of DONE-DONE is!

Experience with unit-testing / Test-Driven Development (TDD) and separated-presentation patterns (whether MVC or MVP-style) will make you very desirable to our team, as test automation is a primary improvement goal of ours to enable our vision of extensible, maintainable, and understandable systems.

We are also exploring test-automation and Behavior Driven Development (BDD), with tools like SpecFlow (Gherkin syntax) and Selenium. We would love to find someone with exposure to these practices who can join us to help lead development of a rock-solid acceptance test / regression test suite!

Experience with government and public health is a plus, but most important is the ability to communicate well with subject-matter-experts and stakeholders in a collaborative environment.

The official job posting is listed here: https://sjobs.brassring.com//1033/ASP/TG/cim_jobdetail.asp?jobId=224641&partnerid=25037&siteid=5010

Or, you can find it by searching on "EPI-X" at http://www.lockheedmartinjobs.com/index.aspx

Development & Team Process

Our team is approaching this application rewrite in small parts, using an iterative & incremental, Scrum-based process with two-week sprints to build functional, vertical slices from top-to-bottom, getting each part DONE-DONE as we go.

In terms of system requirements,  the Epi-X system has been in production for more than 10 years and is one of CDC's most highly respected programs and is relied upon by people in every state and U.S. territory, so our requirements are well defined. We work very closely with our users and subject-matter-experts to create User Stories and Acceptance Criteria to ensure proper User-Acceptance Testing and customer satisfaction.

We are modeling our team process on these guides:

Because we work in a highly regulatory environment, our internal team process also contains internal Lockheed Martin QA, Security Vulnerability scanning, and 508 compliance scanning before we demo our incremental functionality to our stakeholders.

Agile Training Opportunities

We have access, through Lockheed Martin, to many on-line training courses for .NET development, leadership training, and business development. We also have full access to Pluralsight.com's training library, and are looking into subscribing to Industrial Logic's online eLearning agile training library

Location & Work Environment

Our office is located at Executive Park off of Briarcliff and North Druid Hills. We are about 2 miles from the main CDC campus. You would also have access to that facility as well to take advantage of the fitness center, 24/7 library, etc. Lockheed Martin has very good employee benefits as well.

Hope to hear from you!

Take care,
