The Atlanta Atheists Meetup Group Monthly Meetup

  • August 25, 2013 · 4:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Who should come? Are newcomers welcome? Anybody who wants to! Why should people come? To meet fellow atheists/agnostics/freethinkers. Do attendees need to participate or can they just listen? People are welcome to just listen as they like. I am sure everybody will have something to contribute. How will members find you when they get there? Personnel at the brewpub will direct them. We usually meet in the "Cellar" area.

Carolyn, The Greek myths were so much more interesting and creative than the Christian, Jewish or Islamic myths. If we are ever to see these go the way of the thousands of gods people have worshipped tough the ages, we have to impede the effort of those who perpetuate todays myths. The politicians are one beginning place another and perhaps, even more important, is the broadcast news media. It seems that they simply can't pass up an opportunity to introduce some supernatural element into a news event. I was particularly thrilled when recently Wolf Blitzer was embarrassed when he interviewed a young girl after some disaster and he repeatedly asked if she thanked God for the outcome and she replied, "No, I'm and atheist. Would like to see that happen more often.
Blitzer was obviously going for sensation in his approach. It jumped up and bit him on the ass.

Bob, I have agreed with almost every thing you've written. Keep up the good work.

I think one of our goals, as atheists should be to let the politicians we elect know that their religious superstitions were not why they got our votes. In fact, for me personally, their repetitions of the words "God" and "Jesus" is offensive, and makes me want to retract my vote. There is supposed to be a "separation of Church and state" in this country. Why isn't there?

-2-Julian assange, Snowden, manning, are certainly people a fascist dictatorship would put in jail, like America is doing today.  Rather then going after the real criminals, America is putting the whistleblower in jail.I agree that most Christians are good people..  but it is also true that by playing the numbers big business money can sway them to support ugly things that they don't realize they're supporting (because in today's modern world money is free speech and so many Christians are led in the direction because they don't hear the other side of the story)..  furthermore I believe many of the good Christians don't even vote. Like many of us 80 s they can spend a decade or half a lifetime learning the difference between right and wrong..  meanwhile the fund a Christian who thinks they know everything, will vote for whomever their church wants them to because of societal conditioning, that is getting a helping hand from corporate money today because it's good for profit.

History is history. I think it's time to move forward, make a new history per se. Leave religion and 'god' out of the state, the flag, the elections and take issues for what they ARE. Incidentally, there have been various 'God's' throughout history. I loved the idea of Zeus, but like all God issues, that one passed away. I can't change history, but am glad that Zeus is recognized today as a myth. Just like all the religions of today at some point will be.

same as last month and the month before that, could we try to start seating in the middle of the restaurant instead of in the corner? the corner is so Echo'y, that we cannot hear each other talk. and please please don't use the smoking room either, since most of us do not smoke and actually hate cigarette smoke.. the few of us to do smoke can go to the smoking section to have a cigarette. just some common sense, but I'm sure someone has a better idea.
I want to show up, but I work the graveyard shift and will probably be sleeping.

Let's encourage the Christians who believe they are 'open minded' not attend these meetings. They are uncomfortable and I am not there to prove myself but to relax with like minded people. It is a free country, I want them to enjoy their beliefs. I want to enjoy mine as well.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
