The Atlanta Freifechter studies Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), also known as Historical Fencing. The groups works primarily from Joachim Meyer's fencing manual of 1570. Topics of study include Longsword, Dussack, and Grappling. This group is an affiliate of the Meyer Frei Fechter Guild and the HEMA Alliance.
We are a martial arts group, not an SCA, LARP, or reenactment group. The group is active in both the general practice of the martial art, and in the tournaments associated with HEMA. In association with the Decatur School of Arms, the group runs the Southeast Renaissance Fencing Open yearly.
Classes are held Tuesdays at 7.30pm and Saturdays at 3.30pm at Unit 2 Fitness, 240 Ponce de Leon, Atlanta GA 30308. The classes consist of solo drills, partner drills, focused and free sparring. We use nylon trainers for beginners, and steel trainers for regular students. The focus of the class is to take a modern approach to an old art, and try to revive this style of fencing as the dynamic, and effective martial art that it was.
