Jules Massenet's Werther brings Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, an important work from the "Sturm und Drang" period in German culture, to the operatic stage. The story, set in Germany in the late 1700s, follows the travails of the young poet Werther as he falls in love with a woman who has promised her hand in marriage to another man.
