Come see the 'Yosemite of the East' in gorgeous early fall colors!
Panthertown Valley is known as the Yosemite of the East. There are quite a few comparisons to be made - granite features and domes - waterfalls - beautiful meadows, creeks, and mountains. This is one of my all time favorite places to visit east of the Mississippi.
This is a 'slackpacking' trip which means we will not hike too far with full packs. We'll begin our day with the 1.5 mile backpack hike to our campsite by the Tuckasegee river. This is a great camp site with nice soft flat ground.
We'll set up camp and after a brief rest we'll start out for the top of Cold Mountain. This is a great day hike but you'll need to be in good shape as it's 8 miles round trip with a gain of 1000 feet. Your reward will be awesome views of the valley and mountains around for miles. Hopefully the fall colors will be coming out! If time permits we'll try and see Warden's Falls also. After our hike we'll return to camp. Bring your favorite wine and cheese to share with everyone!
Sunday we'll enjoy some short hikes. We have a few options but I recommend we see School House Falls and Little Green Mountain for more great views of the valley below. After our hikes we'll break camp and return to the trailhead.
Required Items: Backpacking and Hiking attire, at least 4 Meals, Water 2 Liters/person/day or water purification system, Backpack, Tent & Sleep Bag, headlamp or other light source - we will coordinate gear to keep our loads light.
Recommended Items: Camera, Trekking Poles, Wine and Cheese to Share
Carpool Costs: Your driver will determine the actual costs and divide among riders. Please be courteous and pay your driver. The trip is approximately 240 miles round trip. On an average vehicle the cost would be $12 per person for gas (assumes 20mpg and 4 persons).
We'll coordinate carpools as the date approaches. Our rendezvous point will be the REI in Buford GA (GA 20 @ I-85) and we'll plan on hitting the road around 8:30am.
