Fly fish Friday

I think we all could use some time on the water or at least some time casting (grassting).

With the water conditions so questionable with the flows, but knowing the striper are going to be in the Hooch, lets go try it out.

I plan on going to the river @6-7 and doing some casting warm up until the sun gets off the water.  Then if the water is safe, fish till dark thirty.

If the water is in poor conditioin, I plan to do more grassting practice (and welcome anyone that wants to work on a particular cast or concept) THEN go to Lasiters Bar just up the road.

So if you would like to join in let me know.  I can set up a little casting course if there is an interest.

Suggestioins for gear.  Grassting-use what ever rod combo you want with a heavy leader (1X etc). For Striper, a 7-9wt rod with 15-25 tippet.  I like black flies that push a little water for night fishing.  Bring a head lamp, wading staff and a fishing lic. with a trout stamp.  Plan on a parking fee too.

So that's the plan.  I may be able to get there a little early but ya never know with Atl. traffic.

Good time, good friends, what could be better? Oh, I know someone hooking into a stripper and then going for a sandwich and a brew! Well two out of the three is not bad odds, I'll take those any time and look forward to the next outing. :) Thanks again for the instructions Rene now all I have to do is put what you tried to teach me into practice.

I'll give the meetup a 5 star rating because of the cool folks I got to meet. What a great bunch of folks. We had a real mix of events from grassting (Tongtong was a joy to watch cast) and fishing (catching could have been better) and then dinner and drinks afterwards. Thanks for being troopers, I really appreciate everyone's attitudes. Thanks, lets do it again.

ATTENTION-ATTENTION! BE ADVISED, THE WATER LEVEL IS HIGH. IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON JUST FISHING, IT WILL BE DANGEROUS. I will be ther around 7pm to do some casting and try to fish but it looks like it will be casting and then going to Lasiters. I will see you there. Also a friend on mine and casting instructor Eric Cook will be there to assist if anyone wants to be coached up on any casting. Thanks for understanding, but I have no control of the water.

Thanks for the clarification, Rene. Oh darn! Now I get to go shopping for some tippet and flies; isn't that terrible? LOL

Dave has brought up some good questions about my vegue equipment discription. I've attached a photo of the type 'Black' fly I tie for when it gets dark out. In the daylight hours with clear water, lighter color flies will be my choice. It has some width and girth so it will send out some vibration when we twitch it. The color black is something I believe in because of my past scuba diving observatioins....the guys in the black wet suits could be seen better than the yellow/blue/pink or any other color in low light situations. I believe the fish will be below it, feel it coming, then use the shadow side of the fly against the moonlight to zero in on it. But this is just my visioin of what is going on in the water.
As far as the leaders size and length, a short leader 4-7ft is fine at night. The lb. breaking strength of 20 is a safe bet. Most breaks offs will be on the first hit (could be a smack on the first to stun the bait, but when they come back for it....They crush it.)

    Look forward to it

Rene - I get the 1X leader, but the 15-25 tippet... is that 15 to 25 feet? Also - are the black flies you referred to a pattern that looks like a black fly.. or just patterns that are black in color? Also Also - what do you mean by flies that push a little water?

    Sorry for the dumb questions.

I went to a Chris Scalley fly fishing class and have a new rod and reel, but am a very new beginner. Is it okay to come if you don't have much experience?

    June 23, 2013

    • Rene J. H.

The fish don't know how much experience you have and your friends won't care.
