Play hookie Tuesday, and go to school!

Yep, it's back with a great twist.  Thanks to the help of my friends Kenny Simmons and Peter Lami MCI we will be spending the day casting and catching.

Kenny has opened the stream for us to do a fly casting class for an hour or two and it will be directed by my friend and mentor Peter Lami who is a Master Fly Casting Instructor.

We will spend a few hours in the morning fine tuning our casts and getting insights on  techniques you may have never thought of.  You will be suprised how just few tweeks will bring you up a level.  Bring your questions for open casting time.  I will work with anyone on anything after the class so give it some thought as to what you would like to work on or learn and we will do it.

For the practice session you may want to make or get a 7 1/2 ft leader that will turn over a chunk of yarn, not a super fine leader that disapates the energy too early.

Then we fish!  By mid morning we will gear up and hit the water.  I can't wait to try out a few new flies on the hogs.  I hope the trouphy trout fever is in your blood, it's in mine.

If you would like to go please rsvp and then pay Kenny when we get there.

We will have some of the 'GoodWill Guides' that are disabled Vets joining us, and so will Craig Riemdeau a professional fly tier.

    Rene,
Got to see some old friends and meet some new ones, it is always worth the 2 hour drive to be with such a great bunch of guys.
The weather was wonderful, the instruction was informative and the fish were cooperative, it doesn't get any better than that.
Thank you Kenny for being best host we could ask for, I really enjoyed the day (next time I'll remember my forceps).

    Rene,
Any suggestions on what to bring for rod length, line weight, fly patterns and colors? Should we anticipate using floating, intermediate or sinking lines; or try each one till we find something that works?
My selection of flys has something to be desired, I might just bring them all and experiment.......

      Use a 5 or 6wt. 9ft but nothing less than a 5wt.

Todd I didn't get a water report yet but my guess is the water will be up a little but clear. Larry the fly patterns are anyones best guess. I am going to try some BLUE SEAL FUR flies just for the heck of it. I always use a floating line, and add weight if necessary or a short 12inch sink tip. It seems every time I fish there they hit something different. My issues stems from thinking, 'I'm going to catch them my way' and not changing enough to figure out what they want.

Any updates on the water conditions for tomorrow? It rained a bit over the weekend in my neck of the woods.

I've got a 10 weight on a Fin Nor reel that I could bring. :)

Rene, I'm looking forward to being there.
Will you really have enough time to teach me how to cast??

    November 15, 2013

    • Rene J. H.

Thats a riot Larry. What's cool is when I get with Peter, eventhough I have worked with him for 7+ years, I learn something. I always try to come away with at least one thing that I can really focus on until I get it right. I hope you can find a 'nugget'. And by the way how many of the 200 rods will you be bringing?

      November 15, 2013

    • Larry F.

Gee, I had not started trying to figure out which ones to bring yet. I guess it will depend on the weather. If it's below freezing, the ones with the guide heaters. Other wise what ever will throw a fly. I'll probably bring at least one or two bamboo rods, a couple of Sage "lite line" series graphite rods, a fiberglass rod and maybe a telescoping steel rod just to round it out.
