Date Change!(again)

First, an apology:

At the last meeting we announced that we were moving our monthly meeting to the 1st Thursday of each month. It turns out that this date coincided with the regular Atlanta PHP (http://atlantaphp.org/). Given that PHP and JavaScript are like peanut butter and jelly, we decided we had good reason to change the date to allow the two groups to co-mingle once again.

The new date for our meeting is the 3rd Monday of each month. We hope this won't cause a lot of inconvenience, but the hope is the email reminders from meetup.com should make this change fairly low friction - it’s easy! Just show up when Meetup tells you to :)

Talk: Windows 8 and JavaScript

For this meeting we have Glen Gordon (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/glengordon/) of Microsoft talking to us about the Windows 8 platform.

Why would a JavaScript enthusiast care about the future of Microsoft Windows? Because the new programming model for building compelling, connected, native apps that harness the full power of the PC will allow HTML5 and JavaScript developers to use what they already know. And because the new marketplace for distributing these applications gives you a potential paying customer base of more than a billion people.

In this talk, you’ll get a hands-on introduction to the next version of Windows, and see how the UI was designed to work seamlessly with a diversity of devices and form factors. We’ll cover how to build Metro-styled applications using HTML5 and JavaScript, and connect you with tons of resources so you can capitalize on this new opportunity that brings your web skills to the next level.

Lightning Talks!

Lightning talks were a success last time, and we are doing it again. If you have something to share: a library, a great resource, some code you played with, a question you want to ask the group, or anything else you want others to know about, come right up and give a 5 minute spiel. The first 3 lightning talkers get a free JavaScript book thanks to our sponsors CCCi (http://www.cccitpeople.com/) and O’Reilly (http://ug.oreilly.com/).
