Please join us on Saturday, June 27th, 7PM at Manuel's Tavern in the North Avenue Room to learn about how science and ethics are related.

Our presenter, Dr. Nathan Nobis, is an assistant professor of philosophy at Morehouse College and an adjunct assistant professor of public health and preventative medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine. His research and teaching interests include bioethics, ethical theory, philosophy of science and critical thinking.

Synopsis of the talk:
"Ethics and science are often thought to be extremely different: ethics is often described in terms such as "subjective" and based on mere "opinion" whereas science is thought to be "objective" and based on the "facts." I will argue that ethics and science are, in some important ways, more similar than many people think in that both often involve developing and testing hypotheses and explanations. I illustrate this through brief discussion of some practical issues in ethics - abortion, voluntary euthanasia, and the treatment of animals. I show that some better explanations of some basic moral phenomena have challenging and surprising implications that sometimes ought to be accepted. "

7:15 - 8:15: Dinner, Drinks, Socializing
8:15 - 9:30: Presenter's talk and discussion

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT SINGLE TAB PER TABLE
Our group has grown so large that it's making it difficult for Manuel's to keep individual tabs, so please be accomodating and allow Rebecca (she usually serves us) to do a single tab-per-table to make things faster for them and for us. Just keep track of what you ordered and split it up by individual credit card or cash at 10.

I'm sorry if this seems like an inconvenience to you, but I want us to be considerate of Manuel's. It's already great enough that we don't have to pay a fee just to reserve the entire room.

I appreciate everyone's cooperation and understanding in this.
