Please join us on Saturday, May 23rd, 7PM at Manuel's Tavern in the North Avenue Room to learn about artificial evolution with Dr. Ichiro Matsumura, Associate Prof. of Biochemistry at Emory University School of Medicine.

The full title of the talk is "Artificial evolution of proteins and cells: a guide for hobbyists"

About Ichiro and his Research

The objective of Ichiro's research is to understand how complex systems (proteins, pathways, genomes) originate and evolve. A better understanding of adaptive molecular evolution will teach us how the machinery of life arose, and enable us to improve the human condition by engineering new nanoscale devices.

Ichiro hopes to engage the group in a discussion of four related topics. First, he will briefly describe the nature of scientific paradigms to explain what scientists do and why. Second, he will describe the organization of the contemporary scientific enterprise. Third, he will explain how complex systems (proteins and proteomes) originate and evolve. Finally, he will suggest ways in which amateur scientists could make fundamental discoveries that elaborate the Darwinian Paradigm.

Agenda
7:15 - 8:15: Dinner, Drinks, Socializing
8:15 - 9:30: Presenter's talk and discussion

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT SINGLE TAB PER TABLE
Our group has grown so large that it's making it difficult for Manuel's to keep individual tabs, so please be accomodating and allow Rebecca (she usually serves us) to do a single tab-per-table to make things faster for them and for us. Just keep track of what you ordered and split it up by individual credit card or cash at 10.

I'm sorry if this seems like an inconvenience to you, but I want us to be considerate of Manuel's. It's already great enough that we don't have to pay a fee just to reserve the entire room.

I appreciate everyone's cooperation and understanding in this.

I thought Dr. Ichiro Matsumura gave a great presentation in the short amount of time he had.
    •  Ichiro Matsumura's talk was fantastic. It was everything a Science Tavern presentation should be - and more. First, he grounded his talk within the context of how scientific research has been conducted over the centuries. He then went on to describe his own work with just the right amount of technical detail for the scientifically-inclined, but not scientifically-expert, Science Tavern audience. Finally, Ichiro concluded by relating his research to an emerging do-it-yourself movement, coming full circle to the broad view of the history and sociology of science he had initially explored. He was a remarkably animated speaker and had a particular knack for connecting with the audience, specifically those asking questions. This was underscored by the trouble he went to circulating about the room and chatting with guests before his talk began so that he could get a sense of their science backgrounds.
    •  This was my first time attending a Science Tavern event. The speaker was engaging and accessible and the attendees asked thoughtful questions and were very welcoming to newcomers. Thanks!
    •  Ichiro really cared about presenting science to lay people and it really showed. This was one of the best ever!

Interesting. Gave us something to think about. It was a little nosiy for the question and answer period. Maybe if the people asking questions stood up it might help.
