08:15PM - 10:00PM : Group discussion lead by guest presenter in the North Avenue Room
Guest Presenter:
Dr. Martin is a paleontologist at Emory University. He earned his PhD from the University of Georgia and has taught at Emory since 1990. He has taught approximately 15 different courses in the areas of geology, evolutionary biology and ecology. His main research interest is the study of plant and animal traces, such as tracks, trails, burrows, nests and feces and how these traces help us understand the behavior of organisms that once lived.
Dr. Martin has written or contributed to numerous books and articles about dinosaurs and dinosaur evolution. He will speak to us about paleontology and dinosaur evolution. This is meant to be interactive, so you should come having read some of the resources linked below so that you can ask Dr. Martin questions during the presentation to help guide the discussion.
Resources to Read to Prepare for this Event
To prepare for this event, please come having at least read the 8-page PDF of the chapter entitled "Dinosaur evolution: From where did they come and where did they go?" Download this chapter by clicking here, or navigate to the Files link on the meetup.com site. (Citation: Dinosaurs: The Science Behind the Stories, by Scotchmoor, J.D., Breithaupt, B.H., Springer, D.A., and Fiorillo, A.R. (editors), American Geological Institute, Alexandria, Virginia: 23-30.)
To further prepare yourself to ask questions, there are three sample chapters from Dr. Martin's book Introduction to The Study of Dinosaurs available here: http://www.blackwellp.... The three chapters are History of Dinosaur Studies, Introduction to Dinosaur Evolution, and Birds as Modern Dinosaurs.

Apologies
I apologize to guests who came last time that I neglected to include the agenda time frames about having dinner followed by discussion. I am sorry about the miscommunication.
Hope to see you there,
Josh
P.S. Looking Ahead to October
Stay tuned to the meetup announcements for October's meetup. This time we will do something slightly different and a lot more interactive. Instead of having one specific topic lead by one presenter, we will be asking for all members to prepare some research on a topic of their own passion before the meetup to post directly on www.AtlantaScienceTavern.com, and then set up their own table with materials (laptop, papers, etc) to allow other members to walk around and learn about everyone's own passions and what makes them interested in science.
Refunds offered if:
Payments you make go to the organizer, not to Meetup. You must make refund requests to the organizer.
