Medical Myths

Our very own ER physician Angie Mattke will revisit her very popular alternative medicine topic. This time around she will be walking us through the world of medical myths.

Dinner and social hour starts at 6pm with the presentation to follow.
We will be in the North Avenue room (from the front door take a right and head all the way back).

Even after Angie Mattke answered the question I asked, I was still wondering if "Drink plenty of water" is yet another medical myth with mostly placebo effect, so I did some research.
A fever of 102 F would increase water loss through skin and breathing by about 250 mL per day (8 fl oz, or one glass of water), which is about 8% of the recommended daily water intake for adults. One glass of water or 8% increase in water intake is not negligible, but I think does not justify using the word "plenty" nor claiming substantial benefits. Especially considering that Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued recommendations saying "... adequately meet their daily hydration needs by letting thirst be their guide."
Sure there is no harm in drinking extra water, just as there is no harm in taking homeopathic stuff (which is just water anyway), but it seems that claimed benefits for both are myths.

I just hope I can survive the talk without spontaneously combusting.
