Extreme Binding with John Hammer Bindable variables are a powerful Flex feature. Adobe examples frequently employ them without drawing much attention to them or how they work. After developing an application that frequently exploited binding, a number of interesting insights were developed about binding mechanisms and their usage. These include: * the interaction between PropertyChange and CollectionChange events * lazy assignment to bindable variables * interactions between creation policy and bindable variables * bindable functions * display components with two bindable properties (e.g., ComboBox) * errors thrown in code invoked by bindable event dispatch * design recommendations for using bindable variables and functions We'll walk through a small ActionScript program that illustrates these and many other points. John M. Hammer, Ph.D. is a software architect at Idhasoft in the Life Sciences group, where he worked on Flex/Air products for managing clinical trials in the pharmaceutical industry. He has also worked at Applied System Intelligence (intelligent systems), Internet Security Systems (security information management), Search Technology (intelligent systems), and Georgia Institute of Technology (intelligent interfaces for aviation). I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
