Software Review: Skitch

Every once in a while I come across a program that's a real gem. I'm really enjoying playing with Skitch, which allows you to create annotations for photos, screenshots, maps, and web pages. Available from the makers of Evernote, an iPad version of the program was just released.

At work, you can use it to capture a screen shot, resize it, and then use arrows and text notations to explain something. The program is ideal, say, when you are going back-and-forth with a web developer. I used to use Grab, which comes with OS X -- it is very basic and using Skitch saves me several steps. For instance, once I save my screen shot I can then save it in 8 different graphic formats, whereas Grab only let you save images as TIFF files. I particularly likes the Resize feature at the bottom left of the Skitch screen, which lets me easily shrink my screen shot -- a feature that Grab doesn't have. Just these two features alone saves me much time.

For personal use, you can use Skitch to draw devil horns on a picture of your old prom date. Or, you can put directions on a map and email it to your evil Aunt Thester, which will ensure that she travels to the wrong state for the family reunion.

Here is a short video of the iPad version: http://youtu.be/L0KQbLOPDvc
And the website: http://www.evernote.com/skitch/

The program has an impressively high rating on the apps store, and better yet, it's free. I don't enjoy editing photos on an iPhone, I'd rather be waterboarded. But if you so desire, there are iPhone and Android versions as well.
