City Secrets

It's easy to take our fair city for granted and think it's pleasant yet dull, but she has a few surprises tucked away just a hop from Queen St! OK, maybe 1.5 hops... But no more than two :-)

Adventuriness: 4/5

Mostly paved along city roads with gravel in Grafton Cemetery. Some grassy areas. Hills. Stairs.

Fitness Level: 3/5

This is a short one at 14Km, but has a few steep hills (see the elevation graph below), stair climbs, and one or two places where bikes will have to be lifted over obstacles.

Scenery: 3/5

Some good views of the harbour from the Domain, nice areas of forest cover, and a nice view of Grafton Bridge from an unusual perspective... a highlight if you appreciate architecture.

Spookiness: 5/5

If you're afraid of cemeteries you'd better skip this one!

The Plan

We'll meet at Verona Cafe around 8:00am and grab coffee before heading off some time after 8:30 toward Grafton Cemetery, Grafton Gulley (also part of the original Grafton cemetery), across to the Domain where we'll investigate alternative routes to the Lower Domain Drive (which may be dead ends, we'll find out!), across to Newmarket Park, up through some backstreets and walkways in Newmarket, Mt Eden, and Newton then back to Verona for lunch.

Finding the Group

See map for directions and look for people with....... helmets!

If you want to join later let me know in your RSVP or phone me on[masked] and we'll arrange somewhere to meet along the way. It's best to let me know and get confirmation as early as possible because I might not hear my phone if it's in my bag when you call.

Suitable Bikes: Off-road, but road bikes OK

The route is mostly sealed but there will be hilly sections of light gravel, which is still fine for road bikes -- just walk or don't go too fast. No mud.

Parking

There's some parking around the meeting point, and buses and trains are close by.

What to Bring

These are optional, but a good idea to take on any bike outing:

+A printed route map

+At least 1L water

+Snacks

+Puncture repair kit

+GPS

+Camera

+Sunglasses

+Sunblock

Weather

Rain or shine, it's on.

Times are Flexible

The only semi-fixed time is the start time. If we've left the start location please phone me to let me know you'll be late and we'll arrange somewhere for you to join. You can leave the group at any time -- take a map if you think you'll need to.

Group Limit

There's a size limit to keep the group together. If you miss out add yourself to the waitlist or just sign up for the next one. If there's enough demand for a particular ride I'll repeat it at a later date. If you RSVP but can't make it please change your RSVP to 'NO' so another can take your place. If you're on the waitlist you can secure a spot for you and the others waiting by volunteering to be Tail End Charlie -- you just have to take a printout of the route and make sure no one gets left behind.

Help

If you get lost or want to join later on the day just phone/text me on[masked] (phoning is more reliable than texting, but I may still not hear it in my bag -- keep trying).

Join or login to comment.

Sorry I can't make it this time but will certainly be keeping an eye for the next ride.
