Cycling is a fun way to socialise and get healthier while exploring the city. Auckland has countless treasures waiting to be discovered by bike... parks, peaks, promenades, and tracks are everywhere, all hiding just under our noses as we drive past on the way somewhere... It's a much better place to cycle than many people think, and has a lot more diversity than most cities. Mountains, forest parks, coastlines, and islands are waiting to be explored on two wheels.
"Ant the Bike Medic" has been recommended by one of our members. Apparently his prices and work are good and he comes to you -- Ph 022 424 536
There's also Bike Barn, Cyco, and countless other bike workshops in Auckland so shop around for quotes.
Note that ACG isn't affiliated with any of the above. The info is just FYI and your mileage may vary!
Organisers volunteer their time and energy to put on fun events for everyone's enjoyment and it's really great to see meetups getting interest and people showing up and having a good time, so when people don't show without explanation it can be frustrating and discouraging, so consider only RSVPing 'Yes' if you're pretty sure you're going to attend -- a large part of the RSVP function is to let the organisers know how many people to expect and encourage them to put in more time. If you aren't sure then you can just put the event in your own calender and RSVP when you come to decide. You can download a calendar file under the event name, just hit 'Export'.
It's best if you don't RSVP for other events at the same time (on meetup.com or anywhere else) especially if there is an attendee limit because you may be taking someone else's place and it doesn't send a good message to the organiser of the event you declined (on ACG or elsewhere), so this is strongly discouraged.
If you change your plans or can't make it then try to change your RSVP as soon as possible, and if this happens just before the event starts then also try to call or text the organiser to let them know you aren't coming, and failing that send them a quick email through meetup when you can. It only takes a second and it will be appreciated -- we want to be considerate to everyone so we all have a good time and keep coming back to host and attend more great cycling events.
Hosting Your Own Events
Everyone is encouraged to host a meetup, just hit 'Suggest Meetup'.
Meetup info checklist:
1. [ROAD] or [MTB] at the start of the title to indicate a road or mount-biking event.
2. A precise starting address,i.e. a street address or obvious landmark so that attendees have all the info they need to find the group by themselves.
3. A start time.
4. Your mobile phone number, so people who can't find you or get lost can get in touch. It also helps you if people are able to contact you to let you know if they can't make it at the last minute. If you don't want to publicise your number you can email it to attendees the day before.
5. An informative description with good formatting and clearly numbered points (for longer meetups) for easy reading and clear communication.
And of course you need to take responsibility for communicating with attendees about any changes that could affect them.
See this meetup for some ideas on what to include in the description (feel free to copy & paste). It's just a guide, but the more information you include about what to expect the better prepared attendees will be (e.g. what sort of bike is suitable).
Once you suggest a meetup it will be reviewed and if all the vital info is present it will be announced, otherwise it may be rejected. Make sure all the info is present to avoid delays.
Please take photos and upload them to share with the group, and to show newcomers what it's all about. Encourage everyone else to do the same!
We take a dim view of no-shows as it can be frustrating to everyone involved when people don't show up, especially for the organiser who is left wondering, so please email me (Brody) about any no-shows from your event so I can have a quiet word with them if it happens a lot.
Please Rate and Review!
Positive reviews help the group to grow and put on more and better events for YOU, our fearless cyclers.
Please rate meetups that you attend with four or five stars if you enjoy them to show more people the good times to be had exploring Auckland by bike.
If you didn't enjoy the meetup so much then let the organisers know why so we can make future meetups better. This is more effective than just giving 1-3 stars (but you can still do that too if you like). Try to base your feedback on specific things under the organiser's control, like how well it was organised etc, but maybe not on the bad weather!
If you like the group overall you can leave a group review too -- say what you like, or what you don't like! (best suggested directly to the organiser).
