Starting from the bridge carpark on Bethells Road we walk alongside the Waiti Stream on the northern side of the sandhills and the first part of Lake Wainamu Track. Around the back of Lake Wainamu we head off track, criss-crossing the stream a number of times before climbing up and around the waterfall before eventually intersecting with the southern half of Wainamu Bush Track. Up this track to eventually reach the Smyth Ridge/Houghtons Bush/Wainamu Bush tracks junction. If time permits we could go a short way along Kuataika Track to the Kuataika Lookout (265m) before retracing our steps and going down Houghtons Track and back along the southern side of the lake to complete the loop. An ideal tramp for anyone with a reasonable degree of fitness to do a tramp centered around a stream.
