Shoot the ghosts at Waikumete Cemetery

Not sure any actual ghosts will turn up as we will miss the Autumnal Equinox by a few days. However, the moon will be just over 80% and rising around 5pm. The sun sets at 7.26, which puts us right in the golden hour before the cemetery closes at 8.30. It seems the perfect time to explore the largest cemetery in New Zealand.

Of particular interest is the oldest section dating from 1886, which runs along Glenview Road from Glen Eden. But there are numerous ethnic and religious areas as well. There is parking along the road and there is an unmarked entrance there as well (or you can simply jump the fence.) I suggest we meet up there.

Definitely bring tripods. Neutral density filters may also come in handy. Note - the area is hilly and the sun will set behind a large, photogenic hill.

I suggest the 24th as a rain date.

A fantastic evening, pity I only had an hour there. You all continue to amaze me with the quality of your work, I am so impressed with all your shots. I need more experience - and filters it seems!

I think we're going to give this one another go - on a foggy winter morning... I realise now I should have waited a wee bit longer for more people to arrive - but I was so anxious to get in there and start shooting, I guess I was a bit impatient. Next time... Glad you had fun, though!

My fault, turned up late didn't do enough of a reccie before hand to decide where the best locations where.

Eventually managed to run into some people and got some pretty good shots, and got together with a few right at the end to create a true "ghost at the cemetery" photo - that was fun!

hope you found some people - we left at 8.30 and I could see some eerily lit tombstones up on the hill...

Hi all, I am doing a photography class and we are having a night shoot tonight. I can come for up to an hour. There was also a guy on crimewatch the week before last, reported to perhaps be living rough around the cemetery. Not sure if he has been caught as yet though so may pay to keep an eye out.

  • Dave C.

Sorry this is so last minute. Something came up and I can't get out of it. It would be great if there was another meetup here at a later date.
    Enjoy the night folks.

The cemetery could be very entertaining! ;-)

OK - see you next time.

I just realized that I have a studio camera movement meetup at 7pm which crashs time with this photo taking. I may come later after 8 or can not show up. Thanks!

    March 22, 2013

    • Veronica M.

Sorry you can't make it! The cemetery closes at 8.30, so perhaps another time...

  • Ewen C.

    Still meeting @ 6.00?

    March 22, 2013

    • Veronica M.

Yes - 6.00 is good. If you want a more of daylight, you can show an hour earlier... I was there yesterday and it was spectacular. (No, I don't spend all my time in the cemetery, I just happen to have a client who is in the headstone business and I was shooting some example of his company's work.)

      March 23, 2013

  • Veronica M.

Here is the information/map of the grounds. http://www.waitakere.govt.nz/cn...
While we will be focussed on the old section along Glenview Road, for anyone who wants to show up a bit earlier - the lawns in the area just behind Great North Road are a riot of colour and cultural iconography. This is where I was shooting yesterday and it was spectacular.
This is the largest cemetery in the country - with over 800,000 interred here, so one could not possibly cover it all off in one day. And tonight - it's all about the ghosts, the history, the feel... and ???

    March 23, 2013

  • Colin

"View Road", perhaps Glenview Road? View Road is about 1Km towards Glendene

    March 23, 2013

    • Veronica M.

Yes! Glenview Road definitely. There is parking alongside the cemetery all the way down the road. I would suggest we park just past Glenorchy Street onwards.

      March 23, 2013

  • Dave C.

Looking forward to taking some great images tonight

      1 · March 23, 2013

  • Veronica M.

Well, I was just out at the cemetery on a commercial shoot and I've got my fingers crossed that tomorrow is a repeat of today... The light was beautiful - they have not yet mown the wildflowers, and I am pretty sure the ghosts are getting gussied up for us!

The cemetery is open until 8.30, so we will have plenty of time in twilight. There is a lot of parking at the entrance to the cemetery on Great North Road, but since it is such a huge huge cemetery, I think it's best to park also View Road, coming from Glen Eden and enter through one of the opening in the fence.

would it be ok to bring a friend ?,and what type of flashes shall i use,

    March 20, 2013

    • Veronica M.

Hi Jonathan - definitely okay to bring a friend. As for flashes - I would suggest being clever. I'm pretty sure ghosts will not come out if they spot a lot of full power on-camera flash going off 8-0 !!! With luck with will have the golden hour sunlight and maybe a bit of moonlight. I'm really looking forward to see how everyone uses the available light and how they augment it...

Oh sounds very interesting, cant wait

    February 24, 2013

  • Ewen C.

Is it public space or private? In which case we'd need permission to shoot.... just wondering.

    January 23, 2013

    • Brendan M.

It's a public space owned by Auckland City Council.
