UltraWide Auckland

So folks I thought we should take out our ultrawides (18mm dx equivalent minimum, ie 24mm FX minimum or wider lenses) & take a few parallax & perspective exagerrated photos.

The focus of this meetup would be on ultrawides preferably 10-20mm dx range to take pics with distorted perspectives rather than on wide scenic panoramas.

Im not sure where it would be best, but Akl City is an example as architecture with long lines is always useful.
But outdoorsy places with stones & rocks lying around trails can also be vey interesting.

Any comments always welcome.

a little disappointing that so few people attended, but it there were so many other meetups and events going on today, it's understandable why. That said the company was good and we discovered a trove of mushrooms which made some unexpected great shooting.

Hi Andrea. V and I have done this walk before. Best place to park is just off Great North on Blockhouse Bay rd. Short walk to the entrance. Here's V's number if you need us:[masked]

And once again we have learnt that we should always expect the opposite of what a weather forecast predicts. Murhpy's law, I cancelled the meetup so its been fine from 11.

Sure, do you have a worthwhile indoor venue in mind? Also, indoors may have fees, which may detract many atttendees. But keen to know what ideas you have..

Are weekdays ok for people or are most of you going to be at work between 9-5 etc ? Or how about weekday evenings say after 6pm? while the daylight is still there we can do some evening shots?

    February 18, 2013

    • Trevor H.

Weekdays can be a bit harder too get there in time but I can try. Weekend's are best. I work 8 to 5

One suggestion that I have been thinking about for a meetup is the Oakley Creek Walkway in Waterview - Avondale... It features Auckland city's only waterfall, and a well maintained track along Oakley Creek. I was there from around 2 in the afternoon & took some great reflection shots. http://www.flickr.com/photos/verdant/page3/

Since it is in and out of the sunlight, there are sunny places (weather cooperating) and shady, almost dark places. Lots of rustic little bridges and remnants of old things here and there as well. Not a lot of unusual birdlife (tuis, ducks, sparrows...) so no need for long lenses - but great for wides to get vertical trees, long reflections, bridges in context. And of course, the waterfall!

    Here is the URL http://oakleycreek.org.nz/

    What do you think?

    1 · February 14, 2013

Good photos on flickr too by the way. Ill remember to bring my tripod & vari ND to get the waterfall :)

Hey Veronica whats a good street address where we can meet then head off for the walk? Ive set it as above but not sure if thats the best starting point. Thanks for the info

      February 18, 2013

  • Ewen C.

Keen as depending on the timing. I'll have my 12-24 and 16/2.8 Fisheye.. :)

    February 18, 2013

  • Zubbin

So guys I really like Veronica's suggestion, I think itll have a little something for everyone to spark some ideas in the general context of ultrawides. Are all of you happy for that to be our venue? Has anyone got a better idea?

    February 14, 2013

  • Zubbin

Wow guys so this has turned into a big one, I am really happy to see such a positive response to what I thought would be 3 people weilding cameras! So come on guys give me a unique idea for aplace, Akl city is getting too repetitive, & too crowded, something with a trail like look might work, close to Akl would be good? Thoughts please...

      I can see why.

      February 2, 2013

    • Zubbin

You would be hard pressed to find a better overall ultrawide, & in hind sight I should have bought that over the 12-24, which I chose only because sometimes 16mm just isnt narrow enough for the odd group photo so its versatility won out

      February 14, 2013

time to reinvigorate my enthusiasm for my 10-22

    1 · February 2, 2013

      thats exactly the idea :)
