Prime Time Auckland

  • Jun 1, 2013 · 2:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

I was pondering a walk about around a certain trail, queen street for example, with the objective being to take out our prime lenses & fire up some super shallow dof shots.

I think the idea of having these specific themed meetups might enforce some discipline & practise around shooting in a particular circumstance or style, what do you folksthink?

Venues & date time to be arranged.

... Suggestions please :)

No worries, fate wants to pull up a trick card on me too, I might not be able to make it as Im feeling unwell. Enjoy your shutter workout :)

Hi Zubbin, this option is available alright. If you click on Photos and then go Upload Photos, it allows you to create a new album. I don't want to set it up yet myself because I don't have any photos to upload. All I'm doing is confirming what Chrissy has above :)

      May 31, 2013

    • Zubbin

Hi guys, yop got it thanks, I need to upload first before I can create so didnt see the option before. But given the meetup will be done tomorrow, might as well let you all post then :) Enjoy

Hi folks, In classic fashion I think Ive caught a bit of a viral, & would like to see the doc. If I feel worse, I may not turn up. But no reason why the rest of you shouldnt continue & do this. The weather forecast looks good & I hope you folks have an awesome day. Ill catch u if Im better. Happy Clicking - Zubbin

  • Zubbin

And the weather forecasts are not that great this time either, but lets see

So, for super shallow depth of field you'd need a lens that opens at about f2 or f3.5 right?

    February 3, 2013

    • Shikhar B.

I'd like to say that if anyone is keen to have a play with DoF and wants a really good prime lens, the 50mm f/1.8 would be the best pick - cheap! (plus it's a great all-round lens - though primarily used for portraits)

However, if you one does not wish to spend money, then any existing lens can really be used, just a matter of shooting right with it :)

As mentioned the point of this meet up is aimed at Prime lenses ( ones that dont zoom) ....HOWEVER to answer your Q abt Shalow DOF ( blurry background sharp foreground) You can get shallow depth of field effects with non prime lenses with proper technique .. Example: get about 3-5 Meters away from main subject ... set camera to Lowest F-Stop . Zoom in as close as you can .. You should notice at lowest F stop and higher focal length, the subject will be more isolated form the background . While on photos with Higher f-stops and smaller focal lengths most of the picture will be sharp. hope that helps

And once again we have learnt that we should always expect the opposite of what a weather forecast predicts. Murhpy's law, I cancelled the meetup so its been fine from 11.

Yes I will be there if the weather holds out

How about shooting on K Road around twilight onwards? Might be better after Daylight Saving ends so we won't be there very late (when things get really interesting!) I've often wanted to go and photograph it at that time, but not the sort of thing I feel comfortable with by myself. But if there were five or more of us, I think that dynamic would change (if that makes sense).

    February 5, 2013

    • Shikhar B.

In regards to "shooting in the dark", do people have ideas on what we could be shooting on the street? - it would be late to take shots of people or anything not well illuminated for instance...

      May 13, 2013

    • Zubbin

I suppose that would be a different meetup then, as this one is at 2pm, but we can always continue till late

      May 13, 2013

Not a photographer but will be my packhorse...lol

Sorry, am now moving house that weekend. Hope you all get some great shots!

    May 12, 2013

Righto folks so I wanted a place that had lots of people & felt that the classic mission bay area would be interesting. I realise we've been there before, but this time we have to do it all with 1 prime lens, & I think it'll be fun. Any thoughts?

    May 12, 2013

  • Christopher F.

just did this yesterday with a 135mm.

Hi all, might be keent to get my nifty fifty out, depending on date, etc..

    February 24, 2013

  • Trevor H.

I will be coming with mine nikon 105 micro that is still a prime

    February 15, 2013

  • Kathy

Thanks Shikhar & Frederick. Please let me know when you plan to get together. I'd like to join in and see what I can earn along the way. Perhaps it would be best if I used my 55mm to 200mm to try to get maximum bokeh?

    February 3, 2013

    • Frederick Bruinsma F.

It would give you the greatest "depth of field" effect in comparison to a 18-55 or equivalent.

      February 3, 2013

    • Zubbin

Kathy If you got your 200 out then youre doing telephoto photography, which is not the same idea as working with medium primes. We're looking at 35-50mm under f2 lenses for this meetup ideally. Of course I wont say you cant attend, my poinot is simply that what you are trying to do isnt th eexpected idea of this meetup.

      February 14, 2013

  • Michael L.

One suggestion is to have everyone attending shoot with the same focal length prime like a 50mm, assuming everyone has a 50mm. Helps us to concentrate on composition..

    1 · February 1, 2013

    • Zubbin

Personally, I would partly agree with Nicola on this in that we have different types of walk abouts for different specific reasons, else we dont need to call this primeTime auckland, I mean, its for primes, if you dont have a prime, well then maybe you can buy one, or accept that you may not make the most of this meetup.

      February 14, 2013

    • Zubbin

Having a prim is not just composition, I mean, your average 18-55 at 50mm f5.6 just wont give you the same as the 50mm at f1.8, its not just about composition, or about bokeh, its about a certain style ofphotography that combines these factors.

      February 14, 2013

  • Zoe P.

This sounds really cool & my kind of photography. Would love to attend, just depends what day it is?

    February 12, 2013

  • Michael L.

Would attend if does not conflict with my travel schedule..
