Queen Street Golden Mile

  • Apr 1, 2013 · 12:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Watch world class athletes and a few lucky members of the public run the fastest mile of their lives - in the 2013 Queen Street Golden Mile (first run in 1972, then in 1982 and 1983.)

In the 1983 Queen Street Mile Mike Boit (KEN) won in a time of 3m 28.36s, still the fastest mile on earth as recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The racing starts at 1pm, so suggest we meet 12pm in front of Starbucks (next to Aotea Square). 12:15 - 12:30 we could move off to shooting location of choice, with a post meetup meetup at Starbucks.

I was just looking at the site for the race and it starts at 2, not one. As I've got a lot of work to do, I am inclined to show up around[masked] today. We'll meet up with you at Starbucks after the race. Will text you if the plans change.

Has anyone checked out the website for all the details???

It finishes on the end of Queens Wharf - access to that area is $15
The race itself according to their website starts at 2pm... and finishes at 5pm.

Here is the link below to the website and you can click on 'The Course' & 'The Event' to see more details.

Has anyone been to this before? How crowded is it? And how likely are you to actually see and capture the runners? I see from the website there are 15 events, which I assume are all run separately, so presumably if one is not intent on seeing the last two International runners' races, one would have a reasonable chance of capturing some of the action and have a chance to move to another vantage point.

After Pasifika this past weekend, I feel I'm in need of a bit of break from the madding crowds, but if we've got a good location and good likelihood of capturing something interesting, I would be interested.

This will be only the 4th time the event has been held, the previous one being in 1983 - so can't say how crowded it will be. I'm expecting there to be time to catch the action from a few different locations.

That's the idea of meeting early, so people can then move to where they would like to shoot from in time.

But I shall be down at the bottom of Queen St capturing them as they hit the finish line... will walk back up and see if you are all still at Starbucks afterwards.
