Ok, I've got an idea. When you turn up at a meet up, take a piccie of yourself (as it will show what you look like on the day) and post it to the meet. That way people can see you.

Sunrise is 6:44am with civil twilight from abt 6:15am, suggest we meet earlier to get a good spot, set-up etc.. say 6:00am??

Tide will be about midway and coming in.

Sun will rise over North Head/Devonport as viewed from Te Atatu.

In hindsight, wouldve been better to get there about 15-20mins earlier to catch that first sky colour. Still got some great shots though.

Yes, I always got to sunrise photos just a few minutes beforehand. This morning was the first time I have ever been there that early for one. The pre sunrise light was stunning!

Hi all, anyone fancy a coffee afterwards? We don't seem to do a lot of socialising. There are plenty of great cafe's around the Peninsula. Of course you need local knowledge like myself to know where the best ones are! ;-)

    1 · April 8, 2013

    • Julia

Sounds good, do you want to post up a good place to go

      1 · April 10, 2013

    • Brendan M.

Yes, Luscious is a good place. Just be really careful where you park. The old petrol station on the right is a definite no no as they have pretty aggressive clampers working there.

Someplace high up? Mount Eden seems obvious, get a view of the city, panoramas, etc. Although... did that one morning a couple of years ago and it was hellishly windy. Our tripods were unsteady and it wasn't much fun. We got good shots, but nothing exceptional. North Head in Devonport, not quite as high and probably less windy has panoramic views with the sun coming up over Rangitoto and first light falling on the city. (Note - I've always been disappointed with photos from Mt Victoria because of the high density housing.)

An out of the box location might be the Harbourview-Orangihina Reserve, Te Atatu Peninsula. Apparently Te Atutu means dawn or fist light in Maori... and here you would get the sun rising over the city to the east, as well as first light on the reserve, which is a protected wetland with a variety of shorebirds, including dotterels, Caspian terns and oystercatchers. (I assume the stilt and godwit will have relocated to the northern hemisphere.)

Hi all, the third photo in this set was taken at Harbour View Reserve (Te Atatu Beach) and the fifth one was taken further South and requires a bit of a walk as well as going down some steep dirt paths through bush. https://www.facebook.com/#!/media/set/?set=a.321113521333558.68488.307990975979146&type=3 Te Atatu Beach is closest to the city, there is a nice concrete path along the water where we can all spread out but the beach may be locked at that time so may require a short walk. There is also a toilet there.

    April 2, 2013

  • Brendan M.

I've lived here for over forty years and was down there a couple of weeks ago. Te Atatu Beach is great for some nice low shots and good reflections off the water. There is also an area at the South end where you can look out over the boats moored but for limited numbers only for that one. Not even a lot of the locals know about it but it's a great place for photos too. I can post some of my sunrise shots if it would help people get an idea.

I will not be in akl

    March 18, 2013

I had a look around on google and it seems Harbourview reserve in Te Atatu (as Veronica said) is by far the best for sunrise city and harbour views. I vote for Harbourview :)

I'm a maybe depending on location (and whether I can get up in the morning lol).
